Natural Sound

I have made a change to the way the DST Replica is attached to the SME 3012R arm. I replaced the Japanese metal adaptor with a very cool tiny disk made by KL Audio. This device allows the cartridge pins to make contact with the arm pins and is attached to the cartridge pins by a miniscule piece of double sided foam tape. The use of this disk dramatically shortens the overall length and reduces the weight at the end of the arm. It also makes for a tighter and straighter fit/connection. It is really a very clever device. I recommend this device to anyone needing an adaptor to rotate the connecting pins. Link and photos below.

What did you do about the geometry to account for the difference in cartridge body length since the SME was designed for G body length cartridges.

I 'spect he moved the arm forwards...

Thank you for your interest. I moved the arm sled forward just as I moved it back when I use the long metal adapter. I’m able to align the cartridgeusing the same jig and protractor I’ve been using for all of my cartridges. The mounting hole to stylus tip distance is different for all of my cartridges, but I am able to align them all using my jig and protractor.

The Neumann DST Replica is the shortest. But it sounded fine with the first adapter and it sounds fine now at a much shorter length. The beauty of the SME sliding base makes this all possible.

I did have to rotate the arm board slightly on its post to account for the shorter length. But this would need to be done if the tone arm more 11 inches or 10 inches anyway. The design of the post and arm board is extremely flexible. I also like the fact that I can put an arm board in each of the four corners of the turntable.

For @bonzo75. War Pigs. There are quite a few system recordings of this song on WBF. Here is one more.

Personally i can't gain a lot of insight from a video. Though i can hear there is decent dynamics in the room.
Can you hear good mid bass impact (clean and punchy)and power from the drums and bass guitar, or is the overall tone more of a lean forward sound?

While i have many reference tracks for testing certain things, for Black Sabbath i also use Fairies wear boots as i have listened to it 100's of times and know it well.
Also the mastering is so varied on different release and many sound quite compressed and lacking in dynamics.

Thank you Rob. There is definitely more midbass impact when listening to the actual system. It gets lost in the recording process and playback. But I do think this video is a fairly good representation of what I’m hearing in the room in terms of balance, tone, and nuance. There is a sense of dynamics and impact too. I think the sense of liveliness and energy does come through on the video.

I don’t really use Black Sabbath for reference, I just like the music and it’s fun. I recorded War Pigs because there are other recordings on WBF of this song. Bonzo likes to do comparisons. I really like Fairies Wear Boots. I really like Black Sabbath’s first two albums, and then some scattered songs after that.

Sounds better than your previous videos (recording on "Imagine" sounded pretty poor...). Enjoy.

I made three changes since that video. I found a better adapter for the cartridge tone arm interface. I adjusted the turntable thread tension, and I adjusted the level control on the upper horn. I agree you can hear the result quite clearly on the videos. Videos can be used as a diagnostic tool as well as for just sharing and fun. I always appreciate the feedback.

The DST seems to have quite boosted your system on dynamic range, midrange, tone, flow, and general engagement. But I agree with Rob’s observation, both on BS and this version of Scheherazade midbass seems to be missing. You had more first so either cart is not burned in or some adjustment to be done

Can't judge the Black Sabbath. The opening bars -- trombones, basses -- on Peter's Mehta Scherhezade don't say missing midbass to me. Maybe not quite as impactful as I've heard. Timpani come through ~5:50 though again maybe not quite as impactful, but not missing. You may not mean 'totally missing', I understand. Meta is a touch lighter than Reiner. Agree about other attributes - I think it sounds good. I like the DST-alike.

Here's the same Mehta on movement 4 -- a bit ticky and skippy. LA is not Chicago. Colibri MS

You don’t have the midbass issue, Peter does (at least per Rob and my take of his videos). He has also recorded the Mehta before on his Magico

With the DST his is more musical though that issue aside
