Visit to Chris to See Magico M9 and VYGER and Pilium in Southlake, Texas

Isn't some intrepid audiophile going to make another forbidden, stealth M9 recording to keep this brawl going, or not?

Hello,

By encouraging "another forbidden, stealth M9 recording" are you implicating my video as the first one? (emphasis added)

I'm sure they locked down the farm after your malfeasance, even if it was a drive by.

I ask because while it is unfortunate that Chris is in the middle, I assure you that I did nothing forbidden. And wrangling a full size pro-sumer video camcorder on a full-size tripod around the room is hardly stealth.

Ron, do you know of another public video of Chris’ pair of Magico M9s? My memory is bad, but I seem to remember a discussion here on WBF that Elon Wolf does not want the M9 recorded playing music. I can’t remember, but I think this came up after Bob East or West visited Dallas or recorded the panels and horns but not the Magicos. Or was it Bonzo, Lee, Jay or someone else? There have been many visits to Chris’ place with videos but not of the M9. Yours seems to be the first. Not suggesting you did not have permission, just that I do not know of other M9 videos from Dallas.

Keith, Peter obviously has nothing to contribute on this particular point. But he sure does love to stir the pot!

That would not address the topic being discussed, Keith. Ron, our intrepid reporter interviewer pulled off some thing no one else was able to do, as far as I know.
but since system video's are worthless ;) , who cares? right?

unless it's a quiet Saturday morning and we (Peter, evidently) need(s) some dead horse to beat.

Beating live horses is not socially acceptable! Better the horse is dead :p

(I’ve always wanted to say that.)

In the past, during Munich shows, Magico demo people would not allow for the room visitors music to be played, and would only play their own, VERY CAREFULLY curated music playlist of mostly audiophile dreck, and few jazz recordings. Any attempts to have them play anything out of their "comfort" zone caused a hysterical reaction. That is why I kinda never considered the brand "seriously" for my own. They know their target market I guess.
How Magico decides to demonstrate at shows is one thing and there are good reasons for why they demonstrate as they do.

The reasons are and I’ve done shows for 25 years is that when you hand the iPad or take selections from visitors lot of times, you are stuck listening to very controversial tracks and then you have serious potential buyers walk into the room and listen to these controversial tracks and just walk out. Sorry, but it’s just not worth it and I know from experience as I like to allow people to listen to what they want. That is why we have Showrooms for people to come in and listen to anything they want .

If you visit either Chris in Dallas, or myself in Brooklyn, we hand you the iPad and you play whatever you want.

By that logic, folks who want to listen to the so called "controversial" music during consumer hours are NOT serious potential buyers?! :) :) :) :) :) :)... What is a controversial music anyways these days I wonder? Crass? ! When I was growing up in the Communist Soviet Union, the Beatles and the Stones were verbotten ;), naturally not to compare Magico's policies with those bad old days of course..... Funny thing is that at many hi fi shows exhibitors will tell you that if they want to clear the room they just play classical music. Shostakovich works the best ... I kid you not! I always suggest they play Sibelius as well, hehehe

I am not speaking for Magico. I am speaking from my own experiences with again, 25 years of doing trade shows, and most of them disc-jockeying a room.

For example-

There are <10 people in a room, you take a request from someone and they take the iPad and select a 17 minute classical track that takes 7 minutes to unfold. Eight of the people out of the ten leave the room. 10 other people walk in look around and walk out during the 17 minute track.

Or you hand the Ipad to someone and they select a terribly recorded hip-hop track. Half of the room gets up and walks out.

Or your requestor puts on an obscure 80's disco track. He bops his head. Others leave the room.

It's not the specific tracks of types of music that is controversial, it happens to be an inappropriate track that works for the specific listener but unfortunately does does not appeal to mostly everyone else. I like to play selections which allow any type of visitor can get a sense for what the system that is being shown sounds like.

I will take my chances at shows with playing selections that can appeal to the majority of visitors. We are always open if someone has specific selections that they would like to hear to have them stop in before or after the normal show hours. This is done almost every day of a show.

I will take my chances at not playing "Russian Roulette" at shows, although different vendors handle the situations in a total different manner. I am not saying that my method or the method of other vendors which are demonstrating at shows is right or wrong, I am just giving my experience and some of the reasons that I chose to operate in the manner that I have in the past and will in the future.

On the flip side visitors that offer selections, which I personally make exceptions for at times, do provide great sounding tracks that are also very good music selections and appeal the masses. Again, Russian Roulette and I chose to take the path that works for me.

Come and find me at Munich, would enjoy meeting you if you are attending.

I never doubted, or questioned your store's customer oriented policies actually. The topic was of Magico's fear, or some may say a reluctance to have their speakers being recorded or played outside of their comfort zone in the public forums, so I just have brought up my own experience.

Sure and my going into the lengthly explanation was trying to explain that it's not about the speakers playing out of their comfort zone, Magicos can play any type of music. The issue is playing BAD music which Magicos especially will highlight in spades. imho.

Actually , I was not , really :) . It just the subject of "controversial" music sometimes brings up those adolescent memories. I still get in "trouble" at home when I have an urge to go thru my Karl Heinz Stockhousen collection on Sunday afternoon at proper levels. ::cool::eek:

Oh, I love Stockhausen's music!

I even have a website dedicated to his music:

Of course, if you listen to Stockhausen's Mikrophonie I (Microphony I) for Tamtam and Six Players you can chase all the mice out of the house with this scratchy screechy plink-plonk noise music :D. But the man could also write incredibly beautiful song cycles and wonderful choral music. A man of many talents and of one genius encompassing it all.

FREITAG aus LICHT, is one of mine favorites, and YES I have listened to them ALL ! ;) I see you also like works of Wolfgang Rihm! Lately I have heavily gone into works of Paul Mefano and Pascal DusapinScreenshot 2024-04-06 at 8.39.54 PM.png

My apologies to the moderator for the off topic!!!! But yes , this music will drive most hi fi show goers nuts , hehehhe...
