Post your female vocal videos

Try playing your speakers in a bathroom to see how natural they sound :)

Do y'all remember when David Karmeli posted a very interesting video about this topic employing a drummer in a empty room which was gradually filled with sound absorbing material? As sound absorbing material was added to the room the tonal balance of the sound of the drumming in the room changed radically.

People who watched the video liked the sound at many different points along the timeline from empty, completely bright and totally reflective room to modest absorption to an absorptive room where a lot of of the brightness was removed from the room.

This is exactly the same movie that plays out here when people on WBF debate whether absorption is good, absorption is bad, and how much absorption sounds good to each of them in their rooms.

If I remember correctly David and Peter and Tim liked the sound of the drummer with little to no absorption in the room. I found that sound to be an unlistenable cacophony. That's why this is a subjective hobby.

Good sound clip how a real drum kit sound like. When you have chance listen to the big dali kore speaker do it.
you think you are sitting in front of the drummer ...magical

That was a very interesting demonstration Ron. I remember it well. I won’t speak for David or Tim, but the reason I preferred the room without the absorption was that it sounded like a drum being played in a room without absorption. There was an authenticity to it, and it was easily identifiable and sounded the way we would expect it to sound. This was in stark contrast to the sound of the drum being played after all the absorption panels were installed. Everyone could tell it was a drum, but it no longer sounded like a natural drum in a room. There was information and energy suddenly removed from the room by the panels.

People can do whatever they want in their listening rooms to create the sound that they prefer. I now try to manage the energy in the room rather than eliminate it. I first saw that video posted and discussed on Myles’s forum. A very fascinating demonstration as I recall it solicited many different opinions.

in recording studios there usually is a live end and a dead end (LEDE) to accomodate both reflections and maintain accuracy whilst sounding 'lively'.

We recently had to deal with speaker setup at an audio event and we ended up using the 'knights room' in an old castle, I think it reflected even more than a bathroom... We ended up putting chairs on tables on the sides of the room to encounter the most horrible reflections.

There was a series of three blind testing videos I did, where the room had 10, none, and 6 absorbers. People liked 6 the best, followed by none and then 10 - which is also what Hieukm confirmed had happened in the room - it was his friend’s room in Vietnam

I think people basically shape their system’s presentation in their rooms based on their target and values. It’s nice occasionally to find some consensus among your visitors.

When Jim Smith came to work on my old system, I found it interesting that he did not want to add or remove any of my acoustic treatments. We simply rotated the tube traps to where he thought they sounded best. Knowing what I know now, I would’ve experimented much more with orienting my old Magico Mini II speakers straight ahead and removing the absorption defined the most natural presentation, but that process would’ve taken much longer than the day and a half that Jim planned to be here. I liked the improvements he made at the time but my system has evolved a lot since then.

I have seen on your videos the boards you add. Do you really think they make a difference ? Why would a narrow board placed against a wall make any difference?

I don’t think most have a developed (mature?) target or values. They keep rolling along. Leads to NLF which is coming in the hobby

Yes, of course they make a difference or I would not have them. I went into all the details in my system thread. Basically, the drywall construction surrounding my fireplace protruding into the room creates a very unnatural reverberation that blurs the presentation in the room. The boards alleviate that by breaking up the sound waves and diffusing the energy, scattering it around the room, but they also have tone because they are different types of wood and different widths. The horns are directional in the corners of the room. It’s the low frequencies from 500 Hz down that are hitting that fireplace surround and blurring the presentation from my system because they hit the hollow wall of studs and sheet rock. It’s not like the horse hair plaster walls in the rest of the room, which are extremely heavy and thick.

The result is more clarity and energy in the room rather than blurring. It’s an extremely effective technique. At some point like this winter when I have time, I’m going to change the construction around the fireplace and create a more attractive variation on this theme.

The target and values are what get you off the merry-go-round of gear swapping. But I think we should return the thread discussion to the subject of female vocal videos. I apologize for the diversion.

Exactly. If a real kit and drummer replaced the reproduction that would tell the tail. Can live music be distorted ? Presumably not in the audiophile way of the output being different from the input.

I don’t think most have a developed (mature?) target or values.

Those with an objective reference may.

Dream Stream
By the quiet autumn wood,
The stream drifts slow where sunlight stood.
The day still lingers, winds still play,
By willow banks in green array.

Oh stream!
Sweet source of yearning,
Still you keep the tale of love returning.
Whose gentle hands once touched the strings,
You sang along as cuckoos’ wings.

Once we dreamed, in seasons past,
To build our home where waters glassed.
We heard the stream in tender flow,
And flowers breathed where soft winds blow.
Deer danced through leaves of golden hue—
The forest dreamed of love so true.

The harp’s faint strings now sigh with years,
The forest still recalls through tears.
At dusk, within this silent glade,
The soul of sound in life has stayed.

Oh stream!
Hear the forest sigh,
Your calm waves bear the leaves that die.
Still drifts the scent of love long flown—
Dream stream, where have those days now gone?
