H J s system !

HPL only , high pressure laminate , which is paper drenched in phenolic resin and then heated / pressurized, very hard /strong / non resonant material .
So its a composite material 40 mm thick , to end all cabinet resonances once and for all :D
I ll take pics in the near future of the material and machining

very cool, very cool...looking forward to this.

Yes incl myself , efficient design no need for more than 8 watts to unleash a sonic storm , iow a green product .
Also the first one to focus highly on bass performance , the most fun of the whole thing is experiencing the designplans coming together .:)

when will you be ready?

Hard to say precisely, but in around 3 months they should be about completely finished.
Its not me that makes the housing, I outsource everything, just the overall design including X - over design is my job, the rest is done by specialistcompanies

Will it be available for others to purchase if they like it?

The housings with transportcrates will be ready around april 4 .
The company will make various pictures of the fabricationstages , they have a inhouse paintshop as well , the speakers will get the full treatment , meaning 7 layers of paint , handpolished black high gloss laquer it looks awesome .
when I get some shots I ll post them

great!!!!!! thanks for the update.

As promised some pics , they forgot to take pics from the cnc machining , they ll do it later on , its solid phenolic resin (paper drenched core ) 40 mm heated pressurized
After this the box will be glued together and then the unitholes will be machined in , the X over will be inside mounted on a exchangeable thick phenolic resin mounting plate , mounting via the 13 inch woofer gap
No extra openings in the material if not needed , to ensure a stiff monocoque construction and no waist material , the material itself is expensive and hard to machine
The material cant just be glued together its to hard/ stiff, the paint will crack , that s the reason the sides have angles and perfect fit
All threads are metal inserts off course
I ll post some more pics ,if I get them , they ll be finished around april 4

wow...no kidding around! Serious stuff! Looking forward to seeing it as it gets assembled!

The 13 inch woofer and 11 inch woofer will be sidemounted in mirror image , facing inwards , the 11 inch is placed above earlevel to give a more roomfilling sound/bass .
The tweeter and mids are frontmounted in MTM configuration , no dampeningmaterial is used in the frontbaffle instead the front slopes gently (absorbing material improves focus but lowers system efficiency it also makes the sound a bit duller/less dynamic imo )
They ll be supplied with either own design footers or otherwise finite element classic for example which are also nice and well made.
The woofers are sidemounted to reduce baffle width and because I want to try it out soundwise .
Papercomposite mids and softdome (ringradiator ) highs ,woofers are from eton , because they are very stiff but natural sounding and are high efficiency plus they have a very low resonance frequency .
No more thiel units , because I found some now that are a lot more natural sounding, never ultra hard /brittle membranes again for me ,that's why I didn't bother with berylium tweeters( scanspeak) for example , they are cheaper as well but price wasn't a concern , this was a case of cheaper and better imo ,sometimes you have to forget the specs/price and just listen
They have to have a certain basequality off course, whether the berylium ones have the slightest edge in resolution or not (which is far from proven as far as I am concerned) , there is more to it then the last bit of resolution
The speaker will be around 1 meter and 35 centimeters high (incl footers ) around 94 db efficiency and has a custom designed :D high impedance X over

The design philosophy behind it is a loudspeaker that is transparent/ coherent / natural/accurate sounding with very natural (sometimes explosive )dynamics and very low coloration , simply a speaker to enjoy and forget about ,because you just know it sounds right .
Its not designed to be a constant changing audiofile fiddling tool, this speaker will play optimal (99 % sure ) with either a 8 watt set or a 1000 watt solid state , with such a speaker you only will test amp quality /characteristics .

This is fun to watch! Thanks for posting.

Great stuff...the sheets are of what material? Is this the "solid phenolic resin (paper drenched core ) 40 mm heated pressurized" from your earlier post?

Nice looking cabinet build. I've used canvas and paper phenolics myself, they're great material for speaker cabinets - some can have higher tensile strength than 7075 aluminum, with FAR great internal damping. Of course phenolics are the mysterious material Wilson uses for cabinets.

But if I may interject some observations about the proposed design. You say you'll have side firing 11" and 13" Eton woofers, I assume they're the 11-581 and 12-680. Also I'm assuming some sort of 3.5 way'ish configuration with the top woofer in a sealed cabinet and the bottom one ported? Well, you might get close to 94db sensitivity with those running in parallel, close but not quite - probably more like 92-93db. But the problem is with Re of 5.2 ohm and 6.1 ohm respectively, you'd end up with a speaker well under 3 ohms throughout the woofer range. If you run them in series to keep the impedance up, you're looked at 88db sensitivity max. So I didn't know what exactly you're planning, but wanted to offer those thoughts before it's too late for you to adjust if needed.

Yes its the 12 -680 but a lot of other manufacturers call it a 13 incher , it all depends where you measure from , regarding efficiency:accurate bassresponse is hard to measure , so getting proper in room bass under 300 hz is more of an art then science only , but these are among the most efficient well made stiff woofers on the market

and rotated front and back , I am expecting crystal clear sound , without strain, emerging from a dead solid /silent background for total relaxed listening , 40 mm hpl with hpl bracing I haven't seen another manufacturer do it , most brace their cabinets with mdf / hdf and use thinner walls iirc , moulded ones maybe different off course
This isn't just ordinary phenolic resin material ,its reinforced .
They re gonna be high gloss black , with probably custom footers , footers with which one can wheel/move the speaker around, but with adding an additional stainless steel metal plate one can " un lock" the speaker to the ground .
It ll be possible to use either 3 footers (2 front 1 at the back ) or 4 footers per speaker, the threads are there with metal thread inserts , it ll be a mass loaded coupling device , the speakers keyword is stability

pics , the speakers weigh around 200 kilograms each just the housing , absolutely big /massive, bigger than I expected , regarding the photoquality the light was very poor in the room

same photographer/ same camera ....more light :D , I ll post some better pictures in a few weeks , as the finish is great and the photos don't do justice .
The custom footers are being made and when these are ready then its time to get some preliminary sound of the system, I will use cerabase classic as well
This Italian system sounds great as well by the way

In da house !!!

I ll try to upload, in the meantime some pics on my flickr page, they are just out of the box and wiped off a little with a microfiber cloth I ll get some 3 M polish later this week for perfect polishing
On the underside of the speaker there are 3 holes (at the back) 2 on the sides and 1 in the middle , you can either use 3 cerabase devices or 4, they are fully adjustable , ive designed some devices myself which I hope to show tomorrow , threads are all M 8.
ive already discovered one big plus of the speakers , nobody is gonna steal them ....they are just to heavy:D
