Marginally... I still hear the same issues.

Imho ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ plus YouTube compression Doesn’t help .I can't help but wondering how the recording (microphone...) affects the sound because the end result is not very pleasant (listen on headphones), IMO (sounds thin and tinny). Would they be better served by a higher quality microphone & ADC ?
I owned these for a while. Quite lively decent bass and transparency. Still had a bit of shout and whizzer highs I just can’t live with. This one of another model sounds pretty nice:
Still, I would be curious to hear how it sounds with better recording equipment.
There is something weird about the sound of that other larger model - something is "off" but I cannot quite pinpoint it. It feels like the speaker is "trying too hard to sound good"...
This is how it sounds in my system. I am not sure this is better a recording equipment. This one of another model sounds pretty nice:

There is some sharp sibilance on this playback...kind of the reason I got rid of my HDTs many years ago...This is how it sounds in my system. I am not sure this is better a recording equipment.
Nikon D7100 + Shure external mics, 9ft from speakers.
The original music
Typically boxy and dry sound, plus that tubbiness in the vocal region that tends to come with midrange drivers connected in inverted polarity (those weird phase issues that make one wonder what the shifting of acoustic centers of drivers is good for when the drivers are audibly playing out of phase), I'm surprised how well a YouTube video is capturing it. Not trying to be ironic, by the way, I tend to not listen to YouTube or similar videos because dynamics are compressed etc., so they all sound the same in most respects.Curious what people think of this one:

For reference, the track on YouTube:
Despite it all, to my surprise via YT, the speakers sound just like when I last heard them in person, same strengths, same issues. Is this Jay’s new system in his newly designed room? You could hear the problems with the room as soon as he started talking in one of the early introduction videos.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
You're right, he must.these types of videos are often an accurate representation. He must think so if he’s posting this stuff.
I don't think so. After all, he did say "grab" and not sound like. I can sympathize with that. While I have never lost my enthusiasm for music, when it comes to audio, I fully got it, too, when he said he isn't afraid of "audiophile snake oil" getting something new in for review as much as more of the boring same.I asked because I watched the Audiophiliac's 6 year celebration video with Herb Reichert. Reichert explains at one point that when he retires he wants a system the "grabs him" with the same type of sound he had when listening to his car radio! Perhaps he was being a little provocative?
Tidal has a 2004 remaster and a 2001, I suspect he's playing the latter which is edgy in comparison.Yes, the "soul" of the recording is lost. The track itself has a really nice sound - dense but still airy and sharp.
At the same time, you can see that the system could impress some. The sounds are distinct, it's not a "mess", but they are all individually dull.
How much is due to the system and how much to the recording (microphone) ? I don't know.
