Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Were the microphones placed at the exact same location ?
Did you match the volume levels ?

What recording equipment did you use? I’m thinking a phone ?

The videos were made a month or two apart. The amp gain is very different, so I did not level match the volume. I think the mic location is off by a few inches perhaps. Yes, iPhone with built in mic. That is the standard that I have agreed to use for sharing with others who do the same.

EDIT: Videos no longer available because unknown to me, I now need to pay for a subscription to be on AudioAsylum. They are available on my YouTube channel.

Here's a comparison where DAC sound differences are easily heard:
I must have bad hearing, as the differences are not obvious to me. When i listen to the video "casually" without looking at it, i cannot tell when there is a change of DAC. Sometimes the level seems to vary slightly, that’s about it,

To hear any differences you need listen to the video in the actual YouTube channel (click on the YouTube logo), where for some reason the sound is much clearer and more open than when playing the embedded video from WBF. But even then the differences are not that great, although some are discernable.

Given the Lampi being a tube DAC I had expected a significantly different tonal balance on the voices (fuller with the Lampi), but that's not what I hear. Good to know, that would not necessarily be a reason to get a Lampi I guess. But that may also depend on the model.

Tried it on YouTube and the sound is a little better, but I still cannot tell the difference "blinded". It would probably be better if the DACs were revealed in the description only, so you could choose to listen to the video without knowing what was being compared... I may just need to rest my ears, it's been a long day!

The differences between the diverse methods of recording your system are much easier to hear, very easy in fact (post #635). What a treasure trove of information! Confirms for me that I will never make a phone recording of my system, ever. As your comparison shows, there are much better ways of recording a system. Not that necessarily I will ever do that either on my own system, but one of your better, non-phone, options would be the only way I would ever pursue that.

The difference to me is significant, the Denafrips DAC is relatively dead sounding and I can happily cross it off my list.

Ok, now I can hear that too. But to me it's most obvious on the track starting just before the 10 minute mark, where the difference is really significant. On the first track it's much less obvious, even though you can recognize it more easily once you have heard the difference in that other track.

Thanks, Rexp, for posting this. Very interesting.

IMO, there is quite a range to the sound of organs in various halls and churches. I actually think Tim‘s recording of the Bach organ sounds closest to what I hear at my local church. Some of the other recordings are impressive but sound a bit thin to me with a lot of reverb. All of the various Oregon recordings recently posted on this thread sounds pretty good to me, but they are all different and I think it’s hard to judge a system with this music over YouTube compared to something like a string quartet.

Big churches in Europe reverb like that and have very long decay

I think the Aries Cerat system is the most realistic playback of this piece you will find.
