Problems with believability in audio

If you play a recording with believable imaging on it through a system incapable of revealing the imaging, the believability is lost. On the other hand, believability does not have to come from great imaging.

This implies a coloured system that will make all vocal performances sound like they are here

Ked, remember that Ron’s shortlist of pop girl with guitar is often recorded in a studio. Such recordings tend to give the impression that they are in the room with the listener rather than in some real venue. It would be interesting for Ron to explain how many and what are these reference recordings that he uses for such evaluations when comparing specific components against each other? If it is a short list and they are all recorded similarly, it does not necessarily follow that the system is colored. If you throw in a large variety of different recordings made in different venues, and the few or many performers all seem to be in Ron’s room, then I agree with you there’s something going on with the system.

A good one for Ron to listen to would be Cat Power Sings Dylan at Royal Albert Hall

You glossed over the "in a true reference system" part. With the exception of your Air Tight cartridge, yours doesn't qualify.
His system looks mighty fine to me, yours on the other hand.

His system is made up of mostly Hype-Fi components. My system is carefully pieced together for the most realistic sound possible at its price-point.

A true reference system is one that produces the most palpably realistic sound regardless of price. These are multi-million dollar systems (including the room, furniture and industrial climate control system).

Good, i thought you considered your system a true reference system, i stand corrected. Have you heard his system ? Looks like a wonderful system with highly praised equipment at a very high price/quality point. :)

If one is most serious about analog reproduction, nothing less than the TechDas Air Force Zero would be the starting point.
Quite a few reports from people with good ears state that after a certain point, turntable price is the only thing you get more of in that ultra expensive segment.;) I doubt the Zero is much better than the VYGER or the Esoteric Mike ownes. :)

I have heard nearly all of the components his system is comprised of. Subjectively, they are capable of good performance by current high end standards.

But my standard is based on the true sound of live, unamplified acoustical performances. Few systems let alone components measure up.

You need to hear the Zero for yourself in a true reference system.

In other words you have put together a system that you can afford and pleases you sound wise. Good for you ! ;)

Yes, i would love to. The TechDas i have heard sound a little to dead/calm for my taste, almost like digital. Probably why Microstrip loves the sound.

Nowadays it is easy to clean your records.

It was easy back then too. Still surface noise no matter how clean. I still have my vinyl just very rarely play it. Mostly listening to newer music. Have my fathers as well, one of these days I might give it a go just to listen to what he has in his collection.

Rob :)
