My homework before attending SF Symphony Prokofiev 5 last Saturday, conducted by James Gaffigan as well. This is way at the very top in terms of recording. Every instrument is clearly recorded in their place, with great dynamic, tonal balance, texture, sound stage. Very well done. Highly recommended.

Leonard Slatkin conducts robust performances of William Schuman's American Festival Overture and New England Triptych and a reflective Symphony No. 10.

Agreed on both the recording quality and the performance, particularly of the 5th. Not surprised if Gaffigan is among the top candidates for the SFSO position..

An innovative program from Samson Tsoy. This was recorded by Linn a couple of years ago at the Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, before he moved over to Harmonia Mundi, and has just been released. The Muziekgebouw is rarely used for recordings, but it is produced and engineered by Peter Hobbs, who's amongst the best in the business. Samson and his partner Pavel moved their Ragged Music Festival from London to the Muziekgebouw in 2023. We didn't go (we went to the first two festivals) because we were in Amsterdam a few weeks earlier, but they obviously liked the venue.

I just couldn't decide, I love/adore piano transcriptions so much, that I figured, how about all three of them?

Dvořák's Slavonic Dances
Tchaikovsky's COMPLETE Nutcracker Ballet
Brahms' 4th and 1st Symphonies

This should fill your dance cards for a while. A good long while.
Now, where's my deerstalker cap? There's a mystery afoot.

Sibelius Symphony 3 with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Simon Rattle. Great symphony but this high res recording on Roon fails to excite me as much as some versions I’ve heard on classic vinyl. It sounds a bit too compressed.

folder.jpgThoroughly recommended 20th century music. Jazzy!
Good recording, the mastering also spares some dynamics

At first glance, oh no, yet another recording of Bach's Cello Suites, but then on closer inspection, these have been arranged for the trumpet. This puts a whole new spin on things. Well worth a listen or six ;)

Could you pls provide the link, I can't find this item on HDTT website.
The Bernstein/NYP Mahler 7 was withdrawn from the HDTT catalog. Given its 1966 release date, the conservative decision was to pull it since HDTT reissues only "out of copyright" recordings, with some exceptions where they have rights to release from the master tape.

Hope that helps. I've been away from this forum for a number of years. DavidNY encouraged me to check things out once again. If I can contribute in a useful way, I will enjoy doing so. All the best!

I've been buying albums from HDTT for a decade or so, and really regret missing this one! Closest I've come is a blog where the files had expired. There is a guy on Discogs with the RBCD, but I'm not interested in 16-bit for this, since I have the Sony SACD.

If you're interested in following HDTT releases, I'm sure you must be subscribing to their Newsletter, right? Another avenue is to look from time to time at the reviews I post on Positive Feedback. I try to cover all of the HDTT releases with a "Recent Finds No. xx" article that will cover the more recent 6-8 albums to which I've been listening. Occasionally, a significant release will get a dedicated article.
