I don’t know what « woke « means, but regardless, Gladiator is overrated IMO. Crowe was good, the battle of Carthage was fun to watch, but the plot was ludicrous.Quite the woke list. What a joke. Gladiator at #97

Is is safe to say it was leap years ahead of ParasiteI love "Mulholland Drive"![]()
But Keith were you miffed that Anora wasn’t in the listI chuckled at that one myself!
I think there was some Christopher Nolan fatigue. I would have had several of his films more highly rated.Inception at 55? They didn’t get it.
List looks to be made by the same person who makes the TAS and stereophile list of components
It says films of the 21st century, so everything after 2000, otherwise there would be completely different films in the listDeparted #31? It is an inferior remake of the original Infernal Affairs which should be in the list.
Because Gladiator is only #97?Another reminder of why I stopped reading The NY Times years ago.
If Schindler's List is on the 1993 list and "The Shawshank Redemption" 1994 is also on it, then for me it is one of the best films ever.Totally agree yet Schindler's List was an absolute masterpiece
Infernal Affairs was released on 2002.It says films of the 21st century, so everything after 2000, otherwise there would be completely different films in the list
Oh, that Chinese film, I'd completely forgotten about it. What's similar is "The Raid I+II" which probably has the best fight scenes ever.Infernal Affairs was released on 2002.

Not really. It may be true for some people, but it usually doesn't get better with age. It starts with accepting other people's opinions.you build your own little world.Tastes develop. Ability to discern quality develops
Another explanation is the general “dumbing down” of people who no longer read or go out, but spend their time on their phones flipping through “snippets”, and no longer have the required attention span to watch a full length movie.Matt Damon had given a good explanation how, after the demise of DVDs, it is no more economical to risk a movie that does not have a standard script…hence so many marvel type movies. Previously the movies made money because after leaving the theatres they would continue to bring in revenue, now that is not possible and all economics are based on those initial few weeks in the theatres.
Very well said. A small example: In my childhood, the ultimate punishment was if you were grounded for being silly again and had to watch other children playing outside. Today, that's no longer a punishment;the punishment today is if you block the Wi-Fi.Another explanation is the general “dumbing down” of people who no longer read or go out, but spend their time on their phones flipping through “snippets”, and no longer have the required attention span to watch a full length movie.
Another factor specific to the US, and which is blatantly obvious when reading this thread, is how political polarization has also dumbed things down. Many people simply don’t have the intellectual curiosity to explore things that fall outside of a pre-defined cultural framework telling them what is “acceptable” (and not “cancelled”). Sad times…
