Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

Yes it does capture the energy and flow of the music quite well, not like being there of course but better than many live performances on youtube.

RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
Here's a tribute from another great

This other video they posted of "The Chain" (I assume with the "better microphone") is problematic, IMO, but I can't say if the limitations may be due to poor mic placement, for example. It definitely lacks "body", and is "shouty".

So these videos are far from convincing, IMO, that the Taiko Extreme is a "digital game changer" (as they state).

If, for whatever reason, you are already convinced that the Taiko has to be great, then you will probably find things in the sound to confirm your expectations. If you are a skeptic (as I admit I am), then you will probably dissect the videos and focus on the problems. Regardless, show this video to a "non-audiophile" with no vested interests in any of this and I doubt he/she will be convinced to dish out big bucks for this kind of system!

Great, someone else with an axe to grind.

Though I did say I am skeptical about the Taiko (after all, it is only a PC, how much can that really affect the sound?), that is besides the point. Now I am sorry I mentioned my own personal convictions...but there is no "axe to grind" here. If some people are "believers", fine.

My point is: if you title the video "a game changer" it is a shame to present it on a video that does not sound terribly convincing!

What are peoples' thoughts on the sound of the videos in the microphone comparison Rex posted in Post #863?

If anyone is stupid enough to make a judgement on one component of the entire chain based on a video based on their bias, they are stupid enough to do it in person or based on some posts. So, nothing for or against videos there. Like with physical room judgement you need to have a certain process to videos. Everything can be misinterpreted. Let's not assume it is only videos.

To really highlight the difference between Shure and iphone, they should have a video comparing change with an iphone, and the same change with the Shure, i.e. 4 videos.

Just one video of iphone vs Shure means nothing. Overall the iphone sounds more pleasant.

That said, I personally like Shure videos as they give a lot of in-room/at seat feeling. But I don't base this on the above two videos, but more on consistently listening to other videos

Correct. We listen to the end result of the source material, room, speakers, component. With videos you add two other variables (the recording equipment and the playback equipment). I don’t ecpext these to be anything else than "teasers".

We are amateurs, and share videos to communicate our enthusiasm. When dealers start doing it, should they have a more professional approach/equipment or can we get "hooked" by a simple video (such as these) ? Innocent question....

No videos is a tool, and like any tool, including postings, it can be misused, or used well. There are people here who have written for years and still the other readers give them a tough time, often misinterpret them, sometimes consciously just to add noise.

Videos are a much better tool when someone runs them in a controlled fashion. They are either there to represent the whole system, or do comparisions on a step by step basis. If someone just posts a random video and discusses only the source component in the chain, that is wrong on so many levels, adding it to a video thread is just noise.

The Shure MV88 receives rather favourable user feedback on Amazon … 73 % 5 stars out of 4855 ratings , whats the problem raising the bar on these system recordings rather than establishing a mediocrity as standard !?!?!

The Shure MV88 sure seems like a decent product. Since it plugs directly into the iPhone integration couldn't be easier.

Why don't we all order this microphone, and a $20 iPhone stand from Amazon.com (to position the microphone at our actual head listening positions) and apply a much greater level of consistency to our individual video recordings of audio systems? (I would have a lot more respect for these videos if we were all doing this the same way.)

One thing such a standard might do is provide less to criticize by those who consistently denigrate system videos. They will have fewer excuses to say “system videos suck“. They will probably watch them and critique them but still likely not post one of their own system.

I think the phone is a pretty simple standard. I like it because it is easy. We could improve the recording standard and also the playback standard, but I am not sure it’s worth the effort. I think people should do what they want to do.

I just ordered on Amazon.com a Shure MV88 and an iPhone stand.

So I was bold and recorded a version of that track on my system - be nice with me, I changed my speaker placement yesterday, am happy with it so please don't tell me it sounds like crap:). I have to tweak it... I used my Tascam recorder with Superlux S502 mics (100$, but pretty good), sorry I don't have those Sure mics. I probably should have recorded it at a lower volume level...

Independently of the system, making a good recording is not so obvious! That’s why professionals do it...

It sounds pretty different than the version posted by Rexp! Better, worse, I don't know, and that's not really the point - listen to the original track and you can figure out the differences. Obviously some has to do with the systems being so different (after all, I'm using a simple RaspberryPi :) ), but I suspect the mic placement is also quite different. My room is also far from perfect. Many variables!

Listen with headphones...

Anyone else want to give it a shot ?
