How do you know when you are done?

A tube amp driven horn system playing vinyl is the best. That is the OBJECTIVE TRUTH.
Let’s look at the opposite. A solid state driven inefficient speaker system playing streaming is….

Un - Natural ?

:)

I mean I have no problem with someone thinking that a horn system with SETs and a turntable is their subjective favorite, but calling it the best and saying it’s the OBJECTIVE TRUTH in caps sounds like a.) trolling, b.) lack of rational thought, c.) waay too much caffeine in the morning.

Al M is not trolling, he is a very objective guy. He objects to analog, to videos, to sets, to horns, to original LPs, to digital sourced LPs…

I feel like I am nearly done, done with the same old tiresome feuds being played out over and over again.

This not particularly a criticism of What's Best Forum as it happens everywhere online. I haven't come across a single forum that isn't plagued by ideological and overly opinionated posters and, in some cases, even moderators. Grumpy old men, I guess.

I have a friend who writes about audio and has travelled across North America and Europe helping people set up their systems. He tells me that he and many of the audiophiles he knows stay away from forums for that reason. I am coming round to their point of view. It's only a hobby for goodness sake.

No it’s not, it it a total reflection of you as a person, what your goals are, are you a sucker or not, do you have class in taste or not, what your temperament is when your choices are challenged, how thorough are you in researching things you are interested in, do you have consistency in why you buy and what you justify, and did you buy to look cool in pics or to sound good on videos and in person

Of course. It was just a caricature. But perhaps not quite that, unfortunately. Some on this forum really seem to believe they have the objective truth. It's not hard to figure out who.

I appreciate a dedication to standards, values, opinions, but when those opinions are delivered with a relentless negativity — it becomes something else.

I agree Wil. It applies to both sides of the debate. And I see it from both sides.

There was a time when people did their thing and shared the results in an open and friendly forum. They would seek advice and receive support and meet like-minded hobbyists. This led to learning and to convivial exchanges and a sense of community. I don’t know what happened, but it seems a bit more combative now.

It is very tiresome to read the constant same old sh-t over and over and in infects almost every single thread. They almost all turn into the same old topics. I don't care to rehash the same opinions every single time , do you?
Let's talk about something new like which is better analog or digital LMAO , let's disguise it , let's talk in tongues about it, oh wait throw in some horns and a bunch of moldy old records...ahh now we have it.
The same few saying the same things from a place of condescension just not interesting or fun IMO

This thread for example was about how do you know when you are done? Somehow I have no idea how the other subjects got here but that's just me.
to quote the late great Roseane Roseannadanna " if its not one thing its another Jane"

Thanks for keeping your buddy in check, appreciate it

Yes that about sums up a lot WBF back and forths and our society as a whole I’m afraid. The “hobby” to me is to continue the fellowship I had as a teenager and young man when my friends and I were exploring the world and all its great music together. The challenge is that as adults we have morphed into the unhealthy creatures you describe and that real fellowship and healthy exploitation is very hard to come by these days.

the real question is: When does the "like owner, like hifi gear" effect kick in? When do we start to look like our gear?

Some helpful AI guidance regarding how it goes with dogs:

Why the resemblance occurs:
  • Initial Choice:
People may subconsciously choose a dog that resembles them in some way. This could be due to a preference for self-similarity or familiarity, which psychologists refer to as the Mere Exposure Effect.

  • Shared Experiences and Environment:
Over time, owners and their dogs can develop similarities through shared experiences, activities, and routines.

  • Personality Convergence:
Owners and their dogs can also develop personality similarities over time, a phenomenon known as emotional convergence.

  • Physical Similarity:
Studies have found that owners can also look alike their dogs, with correlations found in areas like hair or ear length, and even weight

If you already have the best then why would you desire something less than what you already own? It seems you’re advocating going backwards. Maybe you run Benjamin Button Audio, I don't know?

Because the best does not exist as an absolute entity sin stereo sound. There is an individual best, that changes according to individual conditions along time. IMO some people take the name of this forum too seriously.

Music that is live is warm, that is rich, full, and pleasing. I’m sorry you don’t enjoy organic sound.

Well now warm becomes organic. The endless semantic debate is becoming dominant, I will not go on.

According to Google, “natural sound is an accurate and realistic portrayal of an original sound or soundscape, creating a feeling of being present in the original environment without artificial coloration or simulation.”

Sorry, I do not debate on Google meanings. A lost of time. Google is not audiophile. ;)

???I didn’t know you were the official spokesman of WBF. Congratulations! I’m so sorry that you can find enjoyment in something other than “natural sound.”

Although I had an enjoyable exchange of posts with you, your answers show a systematic ignorance of past posts and history of this forum on the subject we are addressing. My apologies, I can't summarize other and mine frequent posts to go on in our posting. " Natural sound " was discussed passionately in this forum - we did not need Google.

Pressure, lol. I also own a collection of my own CDs, as stated earlier in the thread. You have too much compression in your reading.

I am not following you.

This is your reply to ‘no streaming company is actually making a profit yet.’ So, many early morning laughs. :p

Sticking to Vinyl is wise if streaming companies don’t begin making a profit.

You laugh, others enjoy great music in early morning ...

I’m sure artists are enjoying their $0.01284 per stream from Tidal, (the highest in the industry) much more. Only 800 streams for a cup of Starbuck’s coffee.

Sorry, a perfect example of meaningless sensationalist gossip. You don't address the average number of streams for different classes of artists per year or the possible income of artists. Yes, I know some people quote the income per bit - surely much lower and even more misleading. BTW, one minute with ChatGPT can provide us a much better view on the subject.

In that case, I should own these....

I can't work that much when I sometimes see how much money A-cuts are sold for on eBay...lol
The day have only 24hours;)

In fact, prices are driven by investors, not by music lovers. Even rare and sought physical SACDs reach extremely high values, although anyone can get a DSD file replica of the content easily.

Most rare top LPs or SACDs are becoming assets - if we buy at an high price we are increasing it for next sales,
