Stereophile reviews the JBL 4367, finally

Very cool, thanks for sharing that. Congrats on having them in your system too. Another JBL speaker I wish stereophile would review are the DD67000's. There is a bit out there on them, but nothing from the big reviewers. I don't know when I will get new speakers, but I am definitely going to get horns next. Hopefully some JBL's.

That statement seems kinda abstract to me, however I'm assuming he is saying the 4367 is somewhat analytical and he prefers a warmer sound. I prefer a neutral sound myself, with that 15" woofer if the source music has bass at least down to a solid 40hz they will reproduce it. I don't care for a speaker imparting its own signature sound on every recording, having just comeback from AXPONA I will say those ceramic/diamond drivers really sound more correct in the mid's and especially high's, than any other driver I have heard. At least if done right, too bad they are so dang expensive.

im thinking of ordering dd67000 for my new listening space. it's a big room and with the music i enjoy it could fit the bill. i heard them at the harmon store in nyc before they closed - it wasn't optimate conditions. the k2 was in a dedicated listening room. i enjoyed both. i'm thinking a devialet 1000pro (being roon ready) will save me on some cables and outlets in this second system and should be able to control the woofers with ease. i really want to learn more about these speakers but looks like the only way to do that will be to bite the bullet. one thing putting me at ease with that decision is that harmon spends a lot on r&d and so while jbl everest arent magico etc they won't be poorly engineered that's for sure

Regardless of how great they must sound, how noticeable will likely be the beaming from the 15" woofer?

It's a CD design there won't be any noticeable beaming from the woofer. The woofer and horn match directivity through the crossover.

I have owned the 4365 since 2010. They're far from perfect. But i absolutely love them. They make music.

it is fantastic to see some interest in the jbls here. i recently came across 4349s and am using them instead of audio note an-e. very dynamic but very detailed are the jbls. the horn provides an ease and integration is perfect. right now my expenditure on speakers doesn't match elsewhere in system but i can't think what would suit me better given i like rock/pop/rap and am not very interested in strings etc.

i have been thinking about getting into the 4367 or 4365 if they come along. mind you i use a 20W 211 SET amp so power is in back of mind.

I'm in two minds about selling my 4365's. I'd like to try some open baffles. What's making me confused is that right now is the best i've gotten the 4365's to sound. It's a taken me a few years - different amps and sources. I'm really happy with them now. But i'd like some more exciting.....
Am i just kidding myself?

a tinkerer at heart! no sooner is it optimised than you are off to the next thing. why not? sometimes we just want to hear it all. i bought some altecs the other day just so i could hear them and know for myself what all the fuss is about.

No but I wouldn't just make a leap and dump what you have without trying the di-poles first. They can be very different for example dipole woofers and a horn, full dipole, sealed or reflex bottom with dipole top. Each one will have it's own challenges. They will undoubtably sound different from what you have now and if you don't like them?

I like horns and direct radiator as my preference and tried Heils. They sounded great initially, very different, and after living with them I ended up going back. Glad I didn't dump what I had.

I've had the 4365s for 10 years now. And the funny thing is, right now they are sounding their best. After trying different amps and sources over the years, today they are truly singing. Currently running them with a Gryphon Diablo with Auralic S1 into Holo May KTE.

I've always found the 4365s, while sounding very musical, are very polite and safe. I think they lack the dynamic expression i've heard in the older JBLs and or open baffles.

My plan is to get the open baffles, while still keeping the 4365s. Then see which i prefer.

i now have the 4367s. prior to that i had Audio Note AN-E (Spe HE), then the JBL 4349, the some Altec 604-g. I am using the 4367s with a SET amp (211) so maybe 18W per channel. it sounds absolutely fabulous. i was thinking about bi-amping and got a Diablo cheap (old version the 300) to deal with lows. but i still haven't set it up as i don't feel the need. when i trial the diablo v the tomei 211 amp i don't see that the SET is running out of steam at all. i've done a in room freq test and it is very solid down to mid 30s.

the diablo sounds crystalline and beautiful with the 4367 but also a tad boring (mind u thats with digital and my digital set up not as good as vinyl). just that slightest bit of distance between you and the music. with the SET amp when it is all warmed up its brilliant. speakers disappear and with a bit of volume it all comes to life. i had waited years worried power wouldn't be enough. wish i hadn't now.
