Review: Atma-Sphere Class D Amplifiers

Thank you for your comments.

Yes, all the music used for the Class D review is on LP and each selection is listed with a catalog number for identification. I won't use problematic music material in my reviews. The video is on YouTube and plays fine according to other listeners and on my desktop playback.
OK - I tried the links in you Mammoth gold, and got a couple of clicks on-snaps. Then everything tripped in a massive click-thump!
(iPad —> cable —> RME ADI-2 Pro)

But… I found on-line that there seems to be an unplanned power outage.
So I doubt it was the YouTube. ;)
I’ll hunt for the second DAC and see if it gives more joy.

And I can’t even use the exorcise bike, as that thing needs power as well…
Nor can I do the dishes as the hot water needs power to trigger the gas to ignite.

This is only my second review that includes music examples via video of my system with the review component. The first was a review of the Aidas Mammoth Gold moving-coil cartridge which includes 3 YouTube video links. I'm not aware of other reviews that include system videos
Thanks.
Do you have any comparison with the other carts in the Aidas line up?

Which preamp are you using?
I have used three different preamps primarily with the MA-1 Silvers. First was an Aesthetix Calypso Signature (I also have kept the Aesthetix Rhea Eclipse), then a Atma-Sphere MP-1 Mk.3, finally an Aesthetix Metis. The last two when I had the Atma D-class amps.

A took the time to not just read it , but emailed myself .
Excellent review your wording seems very informative.
the video of your system is good
the dynamic range I think is tough on phone playback
but I took the time to use a good set of earbuds ones I know
it has good details and deep bass too

classical for most people including myself does not always convey the type of sound I love
But it remained clear and clean and massive dynamics as classical can have.
I even looked up your speakers as I am not familiar with them.
I do read your comments on many posts and feel your a very informed person
I’ve heard class d be horrible but also very good
at last years audio show ralph had an otl amp on huge acoustic panels
Also upstairs had same panels on a similar type mono blocks as your review
to me the class d performed very well on the panels
regarding videos I think for me its a big plus
I think it gives us a point of view that even your level of linguistics and details is helpful

@tima (some +/- feedback)

I think your YouTube video can be exonerated now… as I found the USB-C to USB-B was giving me problems with other streaming.

Hence I’ve ordered a new cable.

That Atma-Sphere YouTube video is only available through the review and it's had 271 views thus far. Seems like the idea of including a video in a review is working.

Well 3 of the 271 are me…

But for me yes, but I am a visual and auditory learner.

It certainly can be easier to appreciate the written prose, when I can listen to what you listed to, and are referencing in the written prose.

I think the video should get you at least part way there. How much beyond 'part way' is difficult for me to say.

I've never made a video that sounded better than the in-room experience. I'll only publish when the video is sufficiently representative of what I hear through my system and describe with my words. If it helps the reader then I'm satisfied as well.

The video compliments the written review. I am glad people are reading and then listening to the video. I find such reviews more comprehensive. They are very rare.

I paired Ralph’s Class D amps (Minnesota) with the ModWright LS 300 tubed pre-amp (Oregon) with the 95db 8 ohm Daedalus Muse Studio speakers (Washington state)

Gives just the right amount of solidity, and tube sweetness, at least to me. I can lift, and carry the amps. And they are much “clearer” than my DIY FirstWatt amps, and have enough power to spare.

I had a loaner from a friend, Atmasphere Class D mono at my house for a few weeks. I used a tube preamp to drive them. At the time my Dartzeel NHB108 model 1 was my primary amp. When I went back and forth between the two, I really could not tell them apart. Thats a $6500 amp competently competing against a $18,000. That Daetzeel, if you read the stereophile and TAS reviews was over the top praised as amazing. You can't go wrong with Atmasphere Class D amp. I'm sort of kicking myself for not buying a used set a month ago for $3200. Someone scored.

Nice review Tim. Video are a benefit too. Would be nice to hear the Lamm in the same video as a baseline.

You can search for the Lamm video. It’s out there. I’ve listened to both and the differences that are well described in the review do come across over the videos.

I have not heard the class D amps live, but I do like the price and the form factor and the cool running.

Thank you. As I've just started including videos in reviews I 've grappled with how to handle them. Should I include videos of compared-to products? I understand why people might want that.

I believe a review should be expository, a word whose root is 'expose'. Anything that gets in the way of that exposure is unnecessary embellishment. The review should have the product under review as its primary focus.

For now I'm reluctant for the review to appear as a competition. That's the job of the marketplace and not why the review exists. I believe I can do a better job drawing out review product features to compare and contrast using words than what might be taken from two videos.

I certainly open to hearing people's thoughts on this topic.

...it wasn't me, I swear! Although I immediately searched the ad when you posted they were for sale. Oooh I wanted to get those little bastards, but I thought: "Rex seems to really be interested in them. It doesn't feel right to sneak in like that with a smash-and-grab and disrespect The Audiophile Code of Honor."

Rats. I wish it was you.

That is the setup I have used for the past year and a half or so.

We did get moved up to Seattle, and I got a banger room out of the move. I was preparing to console myself with a tiny room, using only headphones.

Yes, fully agree. I don't know but speculate RK voiced them with his tube preamps.
We've never 'voiced' any of our products. But we do use our preamps, which have direct-coupled balanced outputs which we patented. That seems to make them more transparent (and obviously wider bandwidth) than tube preamps that use coupling caps or transformers at the output. So the two are nice together, but 'voiced' isn't a thing.
I'm not DVR but his signature suggests he has the Aesthetix Rhea Eclipse phonostage and the Aesthetix Metis linestage. Fwiw, the Atma-Sphere MP-1 preamp also works quite well with the MA1; I owned both for several years. Both Aesthetix and Atma preamps need quiet tubes.
The MP-1 phono section doesn't need quiet so much as strong so its easy to vet the tubes on a tester. Its really just the three input tubes make about 95% of the noise generated by the phono section; the other tubes in the phono section are far less critical. So we don't audition for noise, just microphonics. The Mk3.3 is quieter than the one you had FWIW since the constant current sources have been vastly improved. The phono has more gain too on that account.
