Recent Concerts You've Enjoyed

Thought this might be a fun thread and a way to find out about acts on tour.

My wife and I saw the Smoke Fairies at the Tractor Tavern last evening as the opening act for Rasputina. The Smoke Fairies are a 'folk blues' duo from Wales and have been described as "Bob Dylan's dream." I thought that their debut release "Through Low Light and Trees" was one of last year's best. It was just the two principles singing and playing guitar. Really terrific concert with excellent acoustics and thankfully not too loud.

If you are ever in Seattle, the Tractor Tavern is a great venue in the Ballard neighborhood. Very fun people watching...I think my wife and I were the only ones without tattoos! I got to chat with them after their set and had my LP signed. I love the lilting Welsh accents!

Here's a video of "Hotel Room" from their debut LP:

Just got home from Incognito at Solaire Hotel and Casino. Great musicianship. At one point everybody save the horn section and Bluey even traded instruments. AWESOME. Two and a half hours of Jazz, funk and even one playful disco tune.

Big bonus is that I won the charity auction for a guitar signed by all the current band members. Super bonus, it comes with a short acoustic set at my house when they come back to Manila in August!

I've been a fan of theirs since the late 80's. This is HUGE for me. :D

That's just too cool! Congrats Jack!:D

Saw Keb' Mo' at Toronto's Massey Hall last night! I only have his S/T debut and the album The Door, so I wasn't completely familiar with the song selections he chose to perform. It didn't matter though as he charmed the audience with some small talk and played at least 3 songs from his Suitcase album, which I must try to procure. He's got a real comic side or lightheartedness to some of his writing, which I and the crowd really took to.

I was really impressed with Tom Shinness who backed him on Cello, Mandolin, electric bass, and a 1931 Gibson Harp Guitar. Very talented musician I thought.

I would definitely go and see him again!

I was hoping you'd report back in!...great stuff! Glad to hear it...I have only his Keb' Mo' album...what else do you suggest I go for?

Having now heard him do three songs from his Suitcase album, I would definitely get that. Do you remember that Martin Scorsese doc Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues? Just discovered there was one he did with Keb' Mo', so I might have to get that as well. I just checked and both are available from Amazon.

Great! Thanks! Note: Just Like You/Suitcase is a double-CD that is actually less expensive than Suitcase by itself.

;)...just ordered on Amazon myself. 5 bucks for 2 CDs!

SCORE!:D. Going to check Amazon Canada as I get free shipping there, but it'll depend on their price. I also want to pick up the new Serge Fiori album (after 28 years...his first release). Serge is one of the founders of Harmonium.

cool...let me know if you get the double album. I will check out serge fiori.

The other thing I want to mention is that about 3-4 times during the show he kept saying "Massey Hall" and smiled, then looked around. He told us he was there with Papa John Croach back in the 70's and then as a backup player with Denise Williams. I think he really like the venue!

Cool...do you know they recorded it and intend to release it by any chance?

Not that I could see, no. I was actually looking around for some activity, but other than the main control board (I don't know the proper term) that a guy was manning at the back I saw nothing to indicate a recording may or may not have been happening.

Oh well...would have been fun.

Gordon Lightfoot is playing Massey Hall in November for 4 nights. I have no idea when the tickets went on-sale, but all 4 concerts are almost entirely sold-out. I'm contemplating getting some tickets in the "Gallery", which is above the Balcony section. Not optimum for sure, but damn...it's Gordon Lightfoot. What do you think?

Excuse me for posting video in this thread, but I had to.....he's such a talent!

And of course......

Two thoughts:

1. I am sure 'scalpers' and other professional agencies have snatched up better seats for re-sale. You may want to look into it.
2. Hey, its Gordon Lightfoot...how often will you be able to go to a live concert and hear him?

I had another wonderful evening this past Saturday March 29th with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra featuring guest Violinist Midori.

Guest Conductor: Jun Märkl
Featured Performer: Midori (SHOSTAKOVICH: Violin Concerto No. 1)

The program for this performance was:

SHOSTAKOVICH: Violin Concerto No. 1
WAGNER: Orchestral Suite from The Ring

Content comments from website:
Majestic. Mythic. Vividly picturesque. The esteemed conductor Jun Märkl stirs drama without words with music from Wagner’s epic Ring operas, based on stories from ancient German and Icelandic mythology and brimming with rich character motifs and instrumental effects. Every concert with superstar violinist Midori is a hot ticket. She’s back by popular demand to perform Shostakovich’s First Concerto, music that follows a range of emotions, from mournful to passionate to raucous and brazen—a perfect showcase for this extraordinary virtuoso.

Midori played the Shostakovich with incredible power.

That sounds wonderful. I was fortunately to hear her play the Shostakovich a few years ago in London. Unforgettable. She was a real prodigy but is so modest compared to many players of her generation. Quite a few years ago, after she had become world famous (playing three violins in one concerto with the NY Philharmonic as one violin after another broke a string), Alfred Brendel gave a week long master class in NYC where she lives. My wife was able to attend the class, and Midori was sitting in the audience of attendees. I wouldn't have been surprised if she just applied to attend just like the others who were amateurs. Interesting, a sheet went around for people to give their contact information and she wrote her home address and phone number - just like everyone else.
