How Good a CD Transport is Required to Sound Better than Streaming?

Esoteric-CD.jpg
There seems to be a fairly solid consensus (Lucasz Ficus, LL21, Al M, etc.) that CD playback or computer file playback, or perhaps both, sound better than streaming (assuming, of course, that all other variables, including the DAC, are held constant).

But I assume that one cannot assume that any device that can spin a CD necessarily will achieve better sound quality than will streaming.

So how good a CD transport does one need to achieve CD playback which sounds better than streaming? Where do the lines (rising sound quality of better transport and streaming sound quality) cross?

re: streaming, there's so many areas where it goes bad. i had to sink $6k into my network (see my review on the Muon Pro on this site) to make streaming even remotely acceptable, but when i did that, i found a Wiim Pro (coax out using custom LPS to power it) was very capable for streaming, and sold my W20se to repurpose funds elsewhere.
I spent nearly the last 20 years trying to achieve a streaming performance that was as good or better than that of a high end CD setup.

As you mentioned there are many areas unfortunately where it can go wrong. First a streamer/transport is needed with optimized firmware/software and solid clock performance. Then its power supply (like for all digital components) is extremely important.
Next when you think (like I did for many years) it finally doesn’t make a difference what Ethernet cable etc you use because everything will be bit-perfect you realize the network environment plays a significant part too. So an Ethernet filter and switch will have a massive impact to improve the performance.

So all in all it’s possible to outperform the best CD players though you have to take a lot into account and it gets pricey too.

I read over at the Taiko Olympus threads that this new streamer can sound as good or as satisfactory as a CD playback.... i have not heard it but naturally curious..

...here my Olympus sounds better than CD/SACD. My "best" disc has been a Venus Label Massimo Farao single-layer SACD.

That disc has been pretty close with previous iterations of streaming here, but not with the Olympus.

My spinner is a Luxman D05u machine, so others may take issue with my comparison, saying the Luxman is not state-of-the-art in CD. In any case, I note it here for reference and context for my comments.

Certainly not in a position to know and I suppose we may be trying to compare the best apple with the best orange. I have heard 3 or 4 streaming set ups in systems I was not familiar with (but good stuff all around). My consistent disappointment was a lack of pace and musical engagement. The SOUND was good to great in terms of image, body and tone but I was just not interested in some of my favorite music. (Rude comparison warning: like trying to sleep with a pretty woman who was just not into it.)

My question would be is your CD play truly optimized ? I have a humble Project transport BUT: LTA power supply with custom DC cable. The transport and PS are on high end footers on a very good isolation platform. They have LessLoss Giant Steps underneath. Swiss digital Fuse Box/ no fuse. Each box has 5-6 internal EMF supressors and 3-4 on top. Player has 3 damping devices on the top cover. Stein carbon fiber mat on CD (HUGE difference). Effective damping compound on CD stablizer (need to get just the right amount and position). Although I am not perfect in this regard each CD needs to be cleaned and polished, demagnetized and destated (in that order) before each play.

Yes this is borderine(?) insane and it takes about 7 to 8 minutes to change CDs. But damn it's like a live performance in terms of engagement. The great thing is that the aspects of musical engagement bolstered by these efforts benefit any quality level recording. They really dig the musicality out of 60 year old Jimi Hendrix etc.
