How Good a CD Transport is Required to Sound Better than Streaming?

Esoteric-CD.jpg
There seems to be a fairly solid consensus (Lucasz Ficus, LL21, Al M, etc.) that CD playback or computer file playback, or perhaps both, sound better than streaming (assuming, of course, that all other variables, including the DAC, are held constant).

But I assume that one cannot assume that any device that can spin a CD necessarily will achieve better sound quality than will streaming.

So how good a CD transport does one need to achieve CD playback which sounds better than streaming? Where do the lines (rising sound quality of better transport and streaming sound quality) cross?

Any reason not to use another power cord and break the Jay's in over the next 4 weeks while you wait for the Theta?
Sorry, I didn't see this post. The player came two days early so I've been listening these past nights. All I have for a cable right now is a $10 job I got from Amazon. I dropped by Best Buy thinking I'd grab a cheap digital cable to use until mine arrives. They had nothing. Hence the Amazon. At least I know it's works and I have been enjoying it even with this.

I have never owned an audiophile cdp or transport. This is a major change for the better even with the lesser cable. Today I got batteries for the remote, so now I can hit repeat and let it burn in. I don't think I need a $600 cable for that.

It is a beautiful piece of gear. It looks great with my silver Baltic 4. If I can figure out how to post a picture I'll put one up.1000002024.jpg

Thanks for the response> I fully expect that once it breaks in and you get the new cable that you will enjoy listening all the more. happy listening :)
:)

My CDT3 came in yesterday.

Plays per this morning, and sounded good even from cold. I put it on repeat and will listen tonight. My DAC is a Mola Mola Tambaqui.

I had a scare with mine last night. It started skipping horribly on one disc. I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol today and smooth sailing.

I'm very happy with mine even without a decent cable. I think you'll love it. What's your digital cable?

Facten:
I'd in interested in your general listening impressions of the Jays, and also any insights of it vis a vis the Sim 260DT. Thanks

Will report on it.

My digital cable is an Empirical Audio Reference BNC cable. Yet my set-up is a bit more complicated, with a reclocker in between transport and DAC. The reclocking system consists of a Mutec REF10 SE120 SE feeding a 10 MHz clock reference signal into a Mutec MC3+ USB reclocker. Same cable going into the Mutec 3+ USB reclocker as from there into the DAC.

Since the Jay's Audio CDT3 has a 10 MHz clock input, I will also try the Mutec REF10 SE120 SE directly feeding into the CDT3.

First impression from the get-go, now confirmed:

I cannot believe how clean and undistorted the music is. Big step up on this alone from the Simaudio Moon 260 DT. Totally worth the investment right there.

Distortion from a CD transport that just puts out 0s and 1s? *) Apparently. Who would have thought? Anyway, the CDT3 shows how it's done. I notice this particularly strongly since I listen to music rather loudly, with orchestral peaks between 95 and 100 dB.

I had thought my sound was already very clean, but this is quite something.

The CDT3 also has more resolution, which is fantastic, but at the same time less surprising.

*) It was not jitter since that was already corrected through my elaborate reclocking system. It was the information retrieved from reading of the disc (?).

Hello Eric,

A big congrats on getting the CDT3! I'm sure you're gonna love it:cool:

I haven't experimented with multiple cables. I've been using the Acoustic Zen "Absolute" a true 75-ohm impedance coaxial digital cable made with zero-crystal ribbon copper.

I ordered that cable because the entire rest of my system is wired with Acoustic Zen's Absolute Copper ribbon cables and I love the naturalness of the sound. I've come to the realization that if it's not broke, don't fix it ;)

Here's a pic of my Jay's with my Mojo Mystique X-24 AM R2R Ladder dac...

Please come back and let us know how you like the CDT3 and which cable you have settled on!

Best wishes,
Don

I have that DAC. What did you stream with. I have a Mojo Audio server with the Root RAM software. I am shocked and amazed just how good my streaming is. I have though on a Jays for a long time but figure the $$ somewhere else might bring more gain.

Did yours arrive with foam inside the laser compartment? Mine did not. I am hoping there was no damage from "erratic movement." It is skipping on a second disc.
Just for another data point....

Mine arrived with the foam inside the laser compartment. I felt with it in place, the mechanism remained very secure and stable in transit while being shipped to me.

Best wishes,
Don

Hello Kingrex,

It's a great dac, isn't it? I think Benjamin does an amazing job with the Mojo Mystique X dac.

At this time, I do not currently do any streaming. I either play vinyl records or I spin cd's on my Jay's Audio dedicated cd transport into my Mojo Mystique X dac.

Maybe some day I will consider streaming, but currently I simply enjoy the sound quality and the process of handling the physical media. I enjoy listening to entire albums - whether it be on vinyl or cd formats. I'm not one to hop, skip and jump around from one song, artist or genre song after song.

I realize I may be the odd man out when it comes to streaming, but it's just how I am, lol.

By the way, you have a lot of great components in your system! I especially love your First Sound line stage... I see we have that in common too

Best wishes,
Don

Mine came with just one piece of foam that filled out the space of the entire compartment above the laser mechanism, yours too? I am wondering because the manual talks about protective foams in plural, which might suggest further limitation of the laser head's movement during transit.

Hello,

Mine came with a large square piece of foam that filled out the space of the entire compartment above the laser mechanism which was to prevent the drawer from sliding open. I will try and attach a picture below...

In addition to this large square piece of foam, there was a second piece of foam inside the transport mechanism which kept the laser held securely in one place while in transit during shipping. I will try and attach a picture of this below...

I hope the photos will be helpful as an illustration of how mine Jay's arrived.

Mine came with only the foam on top , keeping the door from sliding. There was no foam inside.

Todd of Tek told me because the cdt3 does not have a free swinging mechanism like the cdt2 it shouldn't be necessary. Hopefully this is a non issue.

I would tend to trust whatTodd says. He seems to be a very stand-up kind of guy every time I've had the pleasure of talking with him!

Best wishes,
