I'm sure you can sell a little inventory. I just picked up a Koetsu Tiger Eye today to keep my Coralstone company. I am thinking about the Dynavector XV-1t or perhaps the Ikeda Ki. I haven't ruled out Lyra Atlas as long I can find one well discounted off msrp.

Suspension Upgrade available

I was at Stella/Zephryn/TechDAS taking the Genesis 2 Juniors through its paces and I noticed that the system was sounding particularly good. When I walked over to the turntable, I noticed that the familiar Brinkmann Pi cartridge that Nishikawa-san used looked a little different.

"New cartridge?" I asked. "Yes. New version. More important new suspension," answered Nishikawa-san.

We had been playing so much music by then that we were already late for dinner, so I didn't get very much details of the improvement. But from what I recall, the bladder had been removed and it is now just an air piston. Please check with your dealer for a suspension upgrade.

Is this in the current production ? I will not be happy getting an inferior suspension.

This seems kind of quick for a new design with such an expensive turntable. What did he not like about the old suspension?

And Gary, could you determine how the new cartridge and the new tt suspension each effected the new system sound or are you attributing the improvement to both in general. Perhaps one was more responsible than the other. Without going back and hearing just one change at a time, how could one know?

I thought that it was the cartridge.... because I've heard the combination a couple of times, and felt that the cartridge was the let down. I've previously replaced the cartridge with mine in a similar system and thought the system greatly improved.

It was Nishikawa-san who said that the bigger difference was the suspension. The suspension has changed a couple of times - from an air-filled bladder to a gel-filled bladder and then an air-loaded-gel-filled bladder. The problem is always "bladder" because the material the bladder is made of can never be perfectly elastic.

Gary,
We were debating active isolation tables in another thread recently. Did you ever try such a platform under your Roksan Xerxes?

No, I have not. I didn't think that having another suspension on a table which already has a suspension to be a good idea. If it works, it has to be a happy accident.

I guess I will need to speak to Bob about this. Seems strange to me...this sudden change, unless it's part of the current production Q.

A complex design needs to mature under the hands of well experienced users :)

+1 - I guess that with so many users, particularly in Japan, TechDAS is receiving feedback, and improving the product as they go. I know that based on my experience at CES, they increased the vertical compliance of the US-version of the suspension.

I had assumed the same thing until I put my SME 30/12 on a Vibraplane. I know this is not analogous to the TechDas air suspension being placed on an active unit like a Herzan, but using an isolation platform under a table that already has isolation may indeed improve things further. In my case, isolating the separate motor controller/power supply also helped a great deal.

Isn't Christian (Rockitman) planning to put his TechDas on the Herzan? Users may discover that deactivating the air suspension on the TechDas and placing the unit on an active isolation platform like the Herzan may provide better sound, or at least different sound.

I will first be getting a baseline with the TechDAS on the HRS TechDAS platform. It may be some time before I try it on the Herzan.

I have conformed that I will be getting the latest/greatest suspension design...air plus gel.

Gary wrote above that the air-loaded-gel-filled bladder is the latest but the problem has always been the bladder. So perhaps there is no bladder in this latest design. Do you know how the new design gets around the bladder issue? If there is no bladder, how are the air and gel contained in the suspension? I'm curious because the air bladders are a persistent issue with the isolators in the Vibraplane and they are very expensive to replace. My new units don't have issues yet, but my older one is not quite as stable.

I don't have any additional info in that regard.
