Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath singer and godfather of heavy metal, dead at 76

What is anybody's hypothesis as to why these old geezer rockers just can't get off the stage? Phil Collins performing in a chair. Ozzy? The Rolling Stones?

Are these guys as psychologically addicted to the adoration of screaming fans today as they were physically addicted to drugs decades ago?

Why not go out at the top as a jumping rockstar maniac, instead of having your fans remembering you as an elderly and feeble octogenarian sitting in a chair?

I think they like being on stage and the glory commands when they sell out a show. Sometimes they simply need the money. I don’t judge it.

Zubin Mehta is still conducting.

I agree with everything but the money. Most of these people do not need the money. As David and others stated, "this is what they do and it is in their blood"

BTW Ozzy had a net worth of $220M when he died and yes how strange was the very last song he sung

And yes Zubin is still conducting and I bet you and most all here would jump at the chance to see him conduct

I believe he did it as a last thank you to all the fans. Nothing wrong with that and it also raised $200M for charity.

Yes, I think that’s likely the main reason. I did not mean to suggest that Ozzie needs the money, but I think some smaller acts do need the money factors into why they are still touring. Of course I don’t really know it’s just a feeling.

The scholars argue about this. When Deep Purple performed "Child in Time" in 1970, the audience looked at each other and said, "What kind of nut is this? Today, one of the best songs ever."

P.S
Just like Gene Simmons of Kiss claimed to have invented the symbol, but it was actually Ronnie James Dio. His grandmother used it to calm goats when they were jumping around. The truth lies somewhere in between, as always.View attachment 155118

Yes, the origins of heavy metal are complicated. There are early influences, like "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks from 1964, among others:

There is no doubt that Black Sabbath was one of the big founding bands, like Deep Purple that you mentioned. But to say that Black Sabbath were *the* founders of heavy metal is a bit simplistic.

With all due respect. Black Sabbath was THE founding Heavy Metal band. They started it all.

There can be only one founding anything,

And they were it!

Black Sabbath’s tritone in their first album was considered a call out to the devil and star of metal by some. They along with Zep are usually considered to be the founders of metal. Black Sabbath riffs in general, but some said at that time immigrant song was the first song sounding like heavy metal. Metallica has mentioned influences from BS, and you can hear it in the style of chords, while metal drummers often cite Bonham’s hard drumming influences

Robert plant once pointed to a Judas Priest poster and said he hoped he wasn’t responsible for that kind of music. He called (correctly) metal too structured.

A BBC documentary I saw had a funny comment, that while everyone was trying to be Black Sabbath and Led Zep, Def Leppard sounded more like Duran Duran.

It was also mentioned that the first time the phrase heavy metal was used in print was to describe a Hendrix performance, a journalist said it sounded like heavy metal

Tony Iommi did live near a metal factory and lost his finger in a plant machinery. The sounds from there could have influenced his playing

I just asked AI who is the founder of heavy metal .

Yeah, don't forget Jimi. If metal is infused with blues and psychedelica, Hendrix was an innovator in guitar distortion and early use of the fuzztone and wah-wah. I suspect it is the Dave Davies guitar distortion in You Really Got Me that led @Al M. him to suggest The Kinks as early metal. But there is more to Metal than agressive guitar, heavy bass and double bass drums. Metal with its various genres is typically very fast with darker lyrics and sometimes a different music structure.

While no single band or person single-handedly "invented" heavy metal, Black Sabbath is widely credited with pioneering the genre. They established many key elements of heavy metal, including distorted, tuned-down blues rock, heavy riffs, and a dark, ominous sound. Other bands like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix also contributed significantly to the development of the heavier sounds that defined heavy metal. The term "heavy metal" itself first appeared in the lyrics of Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild".
Here's a more detailed look:
Black Sabbath:
This band, fronted by Ozzy Osbourne, is often cited as the most influential in the early development of heavy metal.
Key elements: They incorporated elements like distorted guitars, power chords, and a dark, doomy atmosphere, which became hallmarks of the genre.
Other early pioneers:
Led Zeppelin: They took the blues and infused it with rock and roll energy, creating a heavier sound that influenced the genre.
Jimi Hendrix: Hendrix was known for his powerful and raw electric guitar sound, which was also a key element in the development of heavy metal.
The term "heavy metal":
Steppenwolf: The song "Born to be Wild" featured the line "heavy metal thunder," bringing the term into popular consciousness.
Early usage: The term was used to describe the loud, powerful music of these early bands.

Ok so apparently different to categorize

AC/DC is generally considered a hard rock band, but they are also often categorized as heavy metal due to their influence on the genre and their energetic performances. While they primarily identify as rock and roll, their music incorporates elements that align with heavy metal characteristics.

I quoted You Really Got Me by The Kinks song as an early influence on the origins of heavy metal, not necessarily heavy metal itself.

Black Sabbath is usually not very fast, including compared to some other metal.

They do have great transitions, e.g., in Iron Man, that are hard to play, according to the "Classic Albums" documentary on the band.

Great song. Story goes that they recorded a one-ton bell and then slowed down the tape to make it sound like a two-ton bell.
