Thanks for info. Being that it is analog volume control, it sounds as though I would be better without volume control and letting my pre do that work.
Depends on how good your Preamp is. The Lampi Vol control has very good components, so it will take an excellent preamp to beat it, I would think. In any case, even if you bypass it, the VC option gives you remote control switching and a digital readout.

What do you mean by remote control switching and digital readout?

AFAIK you can have one analog input as an option too.

No clue, but more for sure as many components doubled. Also only 101d tube allowed.

Without VC, you need to use toggle switches to change options like PCM to DSD and between input types.

My pre is audio research ref 3 run balanced for 8m to my Krell 750mcx's. Probably big 7 might be better pre but is don't want to run since ended for 8m. Also phono stage is BMC MCCI so I run my analog fully balanced straight through.

Is that still the case with the Big 7 and Golden Gate? I thought that Lampizator had added auto switching between DSD and PCM.

2 different Dac engines, so I dont think so. Auto-switching in the ESS based Amber and auto-rate switching within DSD and PCM. PCM and DSD are 2 separate Dacs, which only share the USB input. At least, that is my understanding.

Many people still get the VC even when they keep their Pre. Its a cost effective option that allows future flexibility.

My understanding is that the use of higher power tubes ensure qualitied output of up to 3V by Big 7. And if no higher input voltage is needed before the amplifier, then VC might actually be the best option.

Not sure I understand you - please could you attempt to re-explain for my slow brain. I always though two analogue volume controls in a chain was best avoided.

The balanced 7 you can't change valves, you are stuck with Psvane 101Ds. Simple solution is to change your pre to a single ended ;)

Simpler to run big 7 SE to ref 3.

You can change brands of 101d though, ie PSvane Treasure/HiFi or WE replica versions, vintage WE 101d tubs - Globes and ST shape and I have also seen some vintage French brand.
