why all of a sudden the forum cannot handle a single normal i-phone 16 picture file size?

The best size is 2000px wide if you wanted the images to look best on a computer. A phone is no point I agree.

The gallery feature in posts pops up to full screen size, so an image at 2000px wide will look best.

Let's face it, most photos don't even have the resolution where a considerable reduction of file size (e.g., 40 %, see above) would be noticeable.

Sure, if you take a professional camera with optimal lighting conditions etc then you'll get a resolution that is sensitive to file size reduction. But in the real world and with phone pictures, this will rarely be the case.

I say this as the owner of a phone (Samsung S25) that is able to take very good pictures. My vacation photos last summer have been well received (to use a more modest expression) by people who have seen them, I assume mostly when viewing them on a computer screen.
