Clifford Brown’s death at 25 in an automobile accident in 1956 was a tragedy mourned by many great jazz musicians. But in his short life he left a rich legacy of recordings, like this 1954 gig in Los Angeles accompanied by Shelly Manne and other jazz legends. The title says it all: glorious mono vinyl sound.
Listening to jazz legend pianist Teddy Wilson. The first track of this box set compilation was recorded in January 1933 (!) and titled “I’ve got the world on a string” featuring the trumpet and vocal contributions by none other than Louis Armstrong. Amazing what 90-year-old jazz recordings sound like, which predate the tape era and were all direct-to-disc recordings.
I might just have to make a video on the story behind the acquisition of these two pieces…. In short, the 45 rpm was gifted to me. The LP is the result of trying to track down whether or not the 2 songs on the 45 rpm were included on an album release.
