Visit to Audiophile Bill to hear his horns project

Do they start listening before or after they can no longer read the labels?
I fear there are way too many labels in this hobby already without adding the bottled ones.

Belgian beer is often a lot better closer to Belgium... I miss working in Denmark, partially because of Den Tatoverede Enke in Copenhagen, they had all sorts of Belgian beers on tap and an amazing restaurant upstairs. I think they are closed now, but it was one of my favorite places and responsible for a good part of my weight gain while there... ;)

Honestly I don’t think any beer “travels” well tbh. My wife was lucky to spend a good portion of her younger years living in Brussels so we spent a lot of time consuming Belgian beers. The draft Belgian beers on my machines are really very good and miles better than bottles so is no brainer.

Hi Chris,

I am limited by what is available on my machine - the kegs are only available for certain brands
I understand.
But you could try them by the bottle as well. Even if it only to satisfy our curiosity ;)

We just crack open bottles here.
Chimay/Peres Trappistes
Samuel Smith/Nut Brown Ale, Yorkshire Stingo, Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout and Organic Chocolate Stout
Robinsons/Old Tom
Dark Island
Brew Toon/Dark Nite
Elgood's/Blackberry and Plum Porters

SOOO makes Covid distancing and isolation go with a swing.
I see you have a dark and intense soul :D
I only know the Chimay but the rest also sounds tempting to me

I am hereby officially questioning what you hear when you visit Bill, heck i’m questioning your ability to hear anything by the end of the night ;)
Booze is the only legitimate and allowed tweak :p

Re the dark and intense soul, Ked has been my inspiration. But really it's all down to Ra...she saved me from a pointless life of Sol, Guiness and Bud Light.

But then you need to also count in the age of the participants.
Not being able to read the labels could also be caused by farsightedness :p
That makes the judging not really easier ;)

During our 3 week travels through Ireland, I tried a LOT of regional beers and really wanted to avoid the omnipresent Guiness but I have to admit that Guiness is really not that bad at all :D

Bill will tell you, I restrict myself to one glass of Moretti when I've visited him
150 miles drive home
His sound is intoxicating enough
And remains just ahead in my top two systems of all the ones I've heard, incl some extremely good ones w few weaknesses
What Bill's sound excels at, is nigh on impossible to achieve
And yet he has

Oh, it's very good for a commercial beer. But I'll always go for a specialist stout. We have two fantastic pubs near us, one with a micro brewery. You could easily live there.

It's one of the small joys of the move up here, we're not wanting for quality beer.

Same here. Always prefer the small ones if they are really good.
But Guiness is also very good and I had to admit and appreciate that

What is good is Guinness export in bottles. It's about 8% though. First came across it in Brussels.

Monty stole the listening seat again:

Cats find the sweet spot so much easier than humans. Nothing to do with horns, more just being chilled evolved to a way greater degree than us.

I can see that if you don’t spot the cat when you sit down, your listening room gets a lot of high volume non-correlated treble.

For those following my build. There was a query ages back about the viability of getting the horn to cross to the bass even lower. At the time it wasn’t technically feasible using my construction techniques. But I have developed a new method that will enable the development of a horn that will allow me to cross around 120hz now. I should have photos in the coming weeks. The rate limiting step above the considerable time to manufacture is the finish I am applying on this horn. This will have the full high gloss yacht varnish treatment as used on my favourite Riva vintage boats. To do this properly means 12-15 coats with 24hrs cure time per coat and sanding between every single one. Certainly a labour of love but there is no way to hurry this type of traditional finishing. You could spray it in a bunch of acrylic but it isn’t my ethos or style.

Anyway the new horn is just short of 80cm mouth so a total beast since it is made of solid hardwood.

Good to see there'll be a high-quality uber-excellent yacht finish line of horns that can take on Vox Olympian at it's own game.
Bill, going the extra mile (or is that light year?) on aesthetics I'm sure will get the notice of some of the potential clients who will really matter.
And going down to 120Hz with the main horn makes a lot of sense too.

I am VERY exited about this - & I know f'all about horns - what I do know is a crossover from as low as possible to above 6 khz is a fantastic range to work within for sensational sound - its why I love my ribbon speakers - except they crossover at about 320 hz the the base cone

You need to get exposure for sales.

One way is to gamble and take a pair to Munich. There's a risk to that (I saw some guys from Mundorf literally damage Kevin Scott's crossover cabinet) plus room and freight costs, which aren't insignificant.

You also need to get top flight equipment driving them. Some sort of collaboration with other manufacturers would seem sensible.

Otherwise mag reviews I guess. But Munich is where the big money is and if the likes of Cessaro can get 4 orders on their best horn set up in one year's show then Munich probably is worth a shot.
