The New York Times 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century

My favorite war films are all foreign made:

- Zone of Interest (Germany)
-Stalingrad (Germany)
-Das Boot (Germany)
-Come and See (Russia)

I suspect you know how “Come and see” got its title?

You may also like “Pretty Village Pretty Flame”?
And a Macedonian one with Rade Šerbedžija “Before the rain”

The new one “T-34” I rate highly… The love story is a bit much, but overall the scenes and slow motion, and chase scenes are like “Fast-n-Furious” with tanks.

You have to wait till the movie turns - initially seems a bit silly, then one scene you see soldiers in the backround marching into the town. Till then you feel like switchig it off. A few moments after that, suddenly the movie turns.

Think you are listening to your stereo on a busy day and have bad power, and suddenly all the town leaves on holiday and only you have power so it's very clean...suddenly, goose bumps.
I have a friend who had a career in education, and he said “Never lie to a child.”
All I could think about was the ostriches with their heads in sand, unless I got the wrong film.

There was a Spanish movie Celda 211 (Cell 211).

And an Argentine mystery Secret in their eyes. Think it has a poor remake or there was an attempt. There were also a couple of Brazilian movies, one on a nanny, and the other on a bunch of guys who come to US as watchmen to get revenge. Don’t remember the names, but were excellent movies.

The Secret in Their Eyes is an excellent movie...

Ever see “The Kingdom”? Having spent a decade working in the Middle East, mostly Saudi Arabia, I can say the scenery, behaviours, political considerations and religious/law affecting everything is pretty much spot on.

Like all such lists ("100 greatest pieces of classical music", "100 greatest restaurants", blah blah), this is nothing but marketing propaganda by The NY Times to make you spend more time reading their paper. I find all such lists a complete waste of time. It is just one person's opinion. Who cares? People seem to relish ranking, for some reason, even if it is completely bogus. Hmm.... let's see "100 greatest US Presidents", "100 greatest vintage cars", "100 greatest recipes for making pasta", "100 greatest vacation spots", .....it's endless.

A long time ago, someone asked me who my favorite composer was. I said in return, which era? Which genre? Which type of repertoire? Which kind of music? I could go on, but the idea you can rank musicians or composers or for that matter, DACs, is just silly. Time's too precious to waste on these types of games.

I use these type of lists to check out things that were previously overlooked. We've already enjoyed 4 movies from the list that we probably wouldn't have tried otherwise.
