Check this out by Roy Buchanan:

Who else plays with such raw emotional power? And this guy influenced the likes of Jeff Beck with his technique.

I guess death doesn't always bring fame to the deserving.
I don't think Terry Kath is under rated but he widely unknown and one of the best ever .
Today people don't know the old guys like Gary Moore, Peter Green , Kim Simmons, and Robben Ford, Lee Rintenour, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Al De Meola, Larry Carlton, Sylvain Luc, Neil Gerardo, Steve Hunter and more that I can't remember now.

Has Kenny Burrell been mentioned?

Stevie Ray Vaughn...and Albert King...Worthy!

Also just to see where we are at I am going to throw out Neil Young! His work shows a certain proficiency in the country, rock, grunge and blues categories. World class? Chime in if you have an opinion.

Don't think SRV or Albert King have failed to be recognized for their virtuous talents

Following along it seemed that being recognized was in the eyes of the beholder so to speak. So I threw then in, I agree extremely talented!

I agree with those who have suggested that SRV and Albert King can’t really be lumped into the under rated category.

Kenny Burrell is probably a good call. He’s one of my favorites. But he has certainly gotten a lot of accolades in his career, so that’s against including him. I have at least 80 of his albums as either leader or sideman.

As for Neil Young, I think he’s grossly overrated. Whiny, opinionated, and prone to the tantrums that characterize the self absorbed.

But can he play, lol!

IMO, not well enough to warrant an afternoon of basking in his licks. He obviously plays well … but that’s the price of admission. He’s had plenty of press. Underrated? No.

Ron Affif is another virtual unknown. His album Solotude is one of my favorite guitar compilations.

Jack Wilkins (now deceased) is another relatively unknown guitarist with incredible ability. His interpretation of Chic Correa’s Windows is a landmark work.

Cal Collins and Tal Farlow are two more, both now dead.

Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, and J.D. Simo are three more.

One of the greatest, though not unrecognized, was Joe Pass.

Question answered.

Maybe there’s a difference between under rated and under appreciated … and under compensated.

There are lots of very talented guitarists … some known for their sound, some for their creative licks, some for their insightful interpretations, some for the technique.

This thread has pointed out a lot of them.

Nearly forty years ago I was in the audience for the taping of a program honoring Chet Atkins, CGP (Certified Guitar Player). Mark Knopfler was up, and he talked about what he experienced when he’d first come to Nashville. John Sebastian’s Nashville Cat’s came to mind.
Mark said that he couldn’t keep up with the speed … but speed wasn’t Mark’s marque.
I related this story to one of the greatest pickers of all time, and his dead pan reaction was “He should practice more.”

:p

It's a good thread! There are a lot of very talented guitarists.

One more, Amos Garrett. He lives close to me and over the years it has been my pleasure to hear him play. Amos I would say was never a " star" although he played with many famous artists and was respected by those that knew for his talents!

Most musicians work hard to make a living, I don't think they do it just for the money or the fame they do it because they love it, it's part of them! The last time I saw Amos live in a small club in High River, Alberta his hands were suffering from arthritis and he had to be selective about what he played. But boy could he play, he loved sharing his gift, we loved it too!

Guitarist get to much attention. I don't know of any great band that doesn't have an amazing drummer.
