Let's Talk Oscar Predictions

For some, without all their bolts properly tightened, but certainly not for the smart crowd.

Guess I know which group I'm in Bob. I have yet to see an MC at the Oscars do his monologue without insulting anyone. To me calling someone a "fake buffoon" is the biggest insult I've read in this thread. Transcends IMO the things Seth said.

Sadly, I feel the WBF crowd is somewhat lacking in humor. Don Rickles, Joan, and Seth? If you cannot make fun of yourself, and others, you are lacking in humanity. The "smart crowd" can look in a mirror and see the absurdity of life.

The only joke that bothered me was the one about Lincoln

LOL. All great people/comedians
push the envelope. It is what makes us great.

Bear in mind that Seth's roots come from Family Guy, Cleveland Show and American Dad. He is very creative IMHO.

Just looking back a bit, I felt Di Caprio's performance in Django was quite good too, specially when he got into a rage after being told by Samuel Jackson that he was being fooled big by Dr. King. What's with Leonardo and the Academy? 3 past nominations but never won. Till now, nothing. But for sure, he couldn't have snared the award from Waltz in this one.

Ang Lee won for a difficult movie to direct, but let's be honest---no one will ever care about Life of Pi historically. Ben Affleck wasn't nominated for Best Director for good reason imo---he had one great scene (the market), but his portrayal of the ending was as cheese as it gets (the phone ringing, the guys prevented from crossing the set---like really?, the Iranian clowns in pursuit, the locked doors, list goes on and on. Compare that directly to Bigelows final 20 minutes of ZD30 which showed how real suspense is created....or Spielberg's voting scene in Lincoln. Affleck isn't in their league- his directing also didn't leave you a real compelling character outside of himself.

I like Argo, but it's not a film I'd even buy. Let's face it- it could be the worst film of the 11 before it:

Gladiator
Beautiful Mind
Chicago (I've never seen it still)
LOTR
Million $ Baby
Crash
The Departed
No Country for Old Men
Slumdog Millionaire
The Hurt Locker
The King's Speech
The Artist (ok, it's better than this probably)

First of all, I loved both the book and movie adaptation of "Live of Pi". One of the rare times a book and its movie adaptation compliment and enrich each other. I do think that this is one of the few 2012 movies that will stand the test of time. I was looking at your list of recent Oscar winning Best Pictures and with the exception of "No Country For Old Men", I was struck by how forgettable the movies were.

So I started thinking about what movies during the past 11 years that I thought better/more deserving and came up with the following in no particular order:

Children of Men
Pan's Labyrinth
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Kill Bill (Parts 1&2)
Inception
The Lives of Others
Casino Royale
The Dark Knight
The Incredibles
District 9
Drive
The Invention of Lying
The Secret in Their Eyes
Amazing Grace
The Blind Side
The Social Network
City of God

Who knows what goes on in the collective mind of the Academy? Not me. Steve seems to have a good feel for the pulse. My favorites tend to lose more often than not and usually to a sentimental favorite (e.g. somebody passed over too many times).

Leo isn't sweating it.........

Rough life: After skipping the Oscars, Leo DiCaprio is spotted filming on a yacht with bikini-clad women

Maybe it will keep him motivated at generating good performances between sex orgies.

Leo is the man. An endless list of phenomenal performances; shutter island, the departed, catch me if you can, The Aviator, J. Edgar.

Can't wait to see what he does in the Great Gatsby....

---- It is 'Life of Pi' ;)

* The Oscar for Best Original Score ('Life of Pi') went to Academy Award-winning
music composer Mychael Danna, a Canadian from Toronto.
...He worked with some of the greatest movie directors. ...Just google him.

** The Oscar for Best Production Design ('Lincoln') went to Academy Award-winning
set production designer Jim Erickson, a Canadian from British Columbia (Salt Spring Island).
...He lives just few miles from where I'm living right now.
