BTW, I'm sure our residents tape heads recognize the machine!

It's Paul McCartney, 1970, and he is at home recording his first LP. That is a Studer A-80 16 track machine I believe. Paul recorded this LP at home and he played every instrument on every track.

Grateful Dead Harry Popick?

Mark is right but I had the date as '79. :)

Knew you'd know that Roger :)

Almost... There are two A80 basic models: A80RC and A80VU. It is a Studer A80VU model in the photo and at least 16 tracks but it could also be a -24 model for 24 track machine. If it was a -24, then 16 audio modules are located on on top and 8 more channels in the bottom section tilted up but can't see it from the photo.

Picky, picky :)

Ki: According to Steve Hoffman, it's a 16 track machine.

Guilty as charged, Myles. ;-)

The last two Studer A80RCs I retrieved from a studio in Vancouver, BC, the studio owner showed me the same A80VU-16 machine in the back and told me that I could have it for free... I had my daughter's Toyota Prius loaded up to the max with two A80RCs and stands disassembled (must be a record). If I just had a little more room in that car....wooooo "I could've been a contender..."

Good story, Ki

Long Live Studer R2R :cool::D

It's from 1979 (Paul's SECOND "one-man-band" effort). I mean, other than the very obvious fact(s), that: it took as late as 1969 for the three (major) studios in London to just update to 8-track and how Paul would've been sporting a beard for most of that timeframe (except from during the time of his wedding to Linda -in March- thru till the last Beatles group photo in August)...it stands to reason(?): they weren't going to "loan" somebody a state-of-the-art, $11,000 machine to use in a shed.

There are photos on the Web documenting the November '69-March '70 "McCartney sessions"; showing Paul with two Studer 4-tracks synced together (and, they don't even appear to have been larger than 1/4" machines).
