* Did you watch a film last night (on Blu or DVD), and what was it? *

I need some feedback from you guys...

Matt, "The Thin Red Line" by Malick is one of my favorite 'War' movies.
And this Blu-ray by Criterion is 'Reference' all the way! :)
This is a must have BD in any serious movie collection!

-> I've watched this animation movie now for the third time! I just luv it! :)
{But each time, near the end, when the big dragon hit the ground and..., I lost the audio (Dolby TrueHD) for couple minutes, and I have to rewind it for regaining it! And it happened with two of my BD players! So it has to be a disc issue! ...And even a replacement disc didn't resolve the issue! It is most annoying and it is happening to a lot of people too; mostly with Samsung BD players, but it is the disc encoding that is the main culprit and gives many players some serious issues!} :(

FEEDBACK: Oppo BD players seem to fare much better! (No problem with mine.) ...Can you guys confirm this please?
And Samsung & Panasonic aren't up to the task! :( ...My Sony BD player is now in its box, as I'm moving.

Just a few others while I'm thinking of it:

Wilder Napalm -- very funny triangle between Debra Winger, and brothers Dennis Quaid and Arliss Howard. Twist is the brothers are able to set fire to things with their minds. Great style, and works because it feels emotionally true. Directed by the creator of Moonlighting -- really well done.

Straw Dogs -- brutal film from Peckinpah with Dustin Hoffman; captures something really deep and evil in people

Petulia -- legitimately brilliant film from Richard Lester (Help, Hard Day's Night, Superman II, III) -- introduced near flash frame techniques, plays contemporary about relationships though made more than 50 years ago. Fantastic performances by Julie Christie and George C. Scott

Big Trouble in Little China -- hilarious sendup of HK action films from John Carpenter. Kurt Russell is great.

127 hours. Had doubts about this one, but they were unfounded. Glad I watched it.

Between 127 hours and Soul Surfer what more can you ask for ;).

Oppo 83 and LG 580. Pic quality is excellent for bluray on both, Oppo does SD DVDs better. Don't use the analog audio outputs on either, but do use some of the network functions on the LG.

Thanks Bob, I'm thinking of upgrading my 83 to the 95. ...Watch about one or two DVD per year!

I like more the Multichannel analog out to the HDMI digital out. Sounds much better to my ears. :)

Watched The Fighter on blu-ray tonight. Really enjoyed it. Great performances all around.

On Blu...

^ Listen to the fake sounds during the battle scenes! It just don't match the picture at all (1995)!
* The film is a good one though, and the musical score is excellent.
...And during the quiet scenes, the atmosphere is atmospheric. ;)

SCORE: 3,750 bullets.

Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense

I freaking love this blu-ray!

A great band caught at the peak of its powers putting on an incredible show with some of the best sonics I've heard on blu-ray.

Watched it with my teenage daughter and she loved it, too.

One of the very Best Live music Rock concerts ever put on 'pellicule' (cellulose acetate film).

...Now on Blu!

Bob, I have tried on many rewatches of that movie to like it but honest to goodness, I still don't

Steve, that is exactly the way I feel too; the reason why I watched it again third time now!

It has some good acting by Leonardo, and some good exchange moments with the other actors, and some cool special effects; but the overall storyline is just too farfetched, too surreal... Hard to follow; perhaps it's all about Leonardo's wife & kids, and how far he will go to get back to them...

It's a drama! No it's a science fiction! No it's a family story! No its an action movie! ??? :)
No it's the start of a dream, our own dream! ...An inception!...

1. "Taxi Driver" on Blu-ray = Don't expect miracles here on Picture & Sound quality; this is an older film using old stock film.
A Classic by accident!
SCORE: 3,750 bullets.

2. "Amelie" on Blu-ray (that version from the cover picture) = Excellent all the way around, except for one thing; the English subtitles are imposed (you cannot get rid of them)! :(
...And for me, because I'm a French Canadian; I simply don't need subtitles.
SCORE: 4,750 bullets.
