CH Precision new 10 Series product in 2024 : C10 DAC

Not before the switch. Only afterwards. Both are superior examples of the breed. Perhaps more soundstage depth on the Cascade (minimal) and more detail on the C10. My reasons for change had nothing to do with SQ.
Fascinating to hear and good to know. Thanks. Are you able to share why you did the switch from one reference player to another? Was it because you felt there was greater cohesion with your existing CH amplification equipment?

Exactly. I wanted to hear how the full CHP stack would sound. It does not disappoint.

Can fully appreciate that. I have long enjoyed CJ preamps with Gryphon amps...and still do. And then ultimately discovered the Robert Koda K15EX preamp which is sensational to take over for the CJ preamp in interacting with the Gryphon amps.

Eventually, I found myself gravitating towards trying the matching (also pure Class A) Robert Koda mono amps. And there is something cohesive about the sound where you can see how a designer has clearly designed them 'as one'. It does not by any stretch invalidate the Robert Koda-Gryphon combination. Who knows, some might even prefer it.

But I can see 'more' of what Robert Koch is doing in his designs when I hear the combination, and certain attributes of the Robert Koda preamp appear to come forth more intelligibly when paired with its matching amps.

I imagine that is more of what you are hearing as the CH 10-series digital settles into your CH 10-series amplification. Not just of a whole, but where certain elements of the CH sound appear more apparent, delivered more cleanly because the whole system is designed by one mind, one ear.

I am a big fan of having a system(s) from one designer & manufacturer (if I can) to fully exploit system synergy, not to mention full system support for set up, servicing, maintenance etc. from such said one designer & manufacturer.

Does the C10 have an analog preamp? and if so, can anyone share their experience of driving the amps directly with C10? Regards.

Looking for some insight on which would give most benefit in my all ch system - swap out the D1.5 for d10 or add the conductor to the C10 mono ? What I have is awesome !

Well I hope I can help you a bit. Until end of last year I used in my CH Precision chain the D1.5 and C1.2 both with X1. In December I changed to the fabulous C10 converter which I upgraded in February with another PS to a C10 Mono configuration - a perfect decision as the sound improvement is stunning. During the HK High End show 2 weeks ago, I listened a bit to the new D10 transport and the distributor lend it after the show to me for my home audition. I never thought that the change of the transport has such an impact. Everything is better, more clear, more natural, more steady. The only issue is the price which is really staggering. So let's see if I will buy it but my suggestion is that you'll go for the D10 rather than the conductor for the C10 mono which are really good enough.

Fantastic news! Congrats. Most intrigued by the latest digital and particularly CH 10series given the professional backgrounds of the founders. Prior to CH, what digital were you using and what else did you audition before going to CH?

Thanks for your valuable perspective after home audition - I’ve got a goal now so off to work I go !

Many thanks! Well I used quite a lot until 2012 when I got the C1 (followed by C1.1 & C1.2 & C10) as one of the first customers in Hong Kong. Then the CH Precision story started... Prior to that I had a brief spell with Burmester 069 and a longer one with CES belt driven transport and Accustic Arts, Cello /Apogee plus various Wadia Players (6, 7, 850, 860).

I remember the Wadia players pretty well particularly the later generations. Read excellent things about Accustic Arts and Burmester as well. Helpful references.

I am going to add a second power supply to my C10 for mono operation. I'm curious if any owners have done this. What did you notice about the SQ?

I jumped from c1.2 straight to the c10 mono so can’t help but saw Peterhongkong addressed your question.

I just received my C10 Conductor. Ron Buffington of Liquid HiFi and I will be performing the operation today to swap circuit cards between old C10 DAC and new Chassis. As a result of the process, the new chassis and its power supply will become the DAC and the existing C10/Supply evolves into the Conductor. CHP published very detailed directions. No soldering required. Everything is plug/unplug and play. More impressions and pictures after the surgery is complete.

Ah that is excellent - fantastic. Sounds great and looking forward receiving your impressions and the thoughts of the "new" sound. Congratulations !

The Doctor is happy to report that the surgery was a success and the CHP Master DAC and Conductor are now playing. The procedure was as follows: The existing DAC was opened and two digital cards were removed and replaced with two analog cards from the new module. What was the C10 DAC became the Conductor. The digital cards were then installed in the new module which became the CHP C10 "Master" DAC. A firmware update was performed and the units placed in their spots in my racks. We took ESD precautions by performing all operations on an ESD mat with the operator wearing a wrist strap to prevent discharges. The process was well documented by CHP and easy to perform (with the able help of Ron Buffington from Liquid HiFi). Here are some pics of the operation.

First we prepped the units by placing them side by side and removing the back and bottom screws that retained the unit covers.

IMG_3199.jpeg

After the covers were off we removed, we released the two (L/R) analog and digital board retainers, unplugged one ribbon cable for each card, slid them out of the chassis and completed the swap. In the picture below you can see how the cards were oriented. They run from left to right inside the red components mating to a transverse motherboard. The second and third pictures show the chassis's to both units with the cards removed prior to the swap.

After the swap, we replaced the covers and screws and wired them up in my room. The USB input from the Server now went to the Conductor. The Conductor has its own power supply which feeds left and right channels. The Master DAC is connected to the Conductor with two "CH LinK" cables that are unique to CH Precision products. They were of excellent quality and generous length permitting us to arrange the modules as we desired. The Master DAC outputs were XLR connections to the L10 PreAmp.

Next up was the firmware upgrade for both units. This was accomplished by inserting a small USB plug into the Conductor, pressing a combination of power buttons and standing back to watch. Multiple loads of firmware for display functions, DAC and Conductor were loaded sequentially without incident. Well Done CHP! This was unexpectedly easy.

After the units were ready, we fired up the T10 Clock, L10 Pre and M10 Power amp and beautiful music was available. Relief! I have to admit I was anxious about performing open heart surgery on these two units but good planning, good instructions and Ron's assistance made it seem simple. I played the units overnight to start a break-in.

IMG_3205.jpeg

The fact that the umbilicals provided were generous in length permitted us to put the two power supplies for Conductor and Master DAC on the bottom two shelves the right rack with the T10 Clock above. The Conductor is on the top shelf in the center with the Master DAC below it and the L10 and its Power Supply on the bottom two shelves. My Pink Faun Ultra Server and CAD grounding system are located on the left rack.

Next up is adding the additional power supply to the Master DAC to create a Mono configuration and a few months after that adding a second M10 and Supply to make them mono blocks. It was a long day but the results are worth it. Many thanks to Ron for his willingness to travel to my house and accomplish this installation and congratulations to CH Precision for making the modification easy to perform through solid engineering and documentation.

Lovely system. I'm glad to see the works of Scott at Computer Audio Design (CAD) as part of it. Great products - wonderful people.
