Audiophile Guru Syndrome

If there is a lengthy post challenge trophy .
Music and wine is definitely a candidate
Where he grew up, that's merely regarded as a quick turn of phrase.

Think Entish...

"You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say" - Treebeard.

None of us is after exactly the same thing.

Exactly. Some are after SETs/horns, some are not.

Any time anyone here is actually happy with what they have it’s time to celebrate.

I am very happy with my system. Noob or not.

If we're talking about an SET, the simple fact is there will be less realism if deep bass is allowed into the amp.

I've not been advocating people dump their SETs. I have been advocating being pragmatic about what the amps can and cannot do. If you apply that pragmatism, you prevent the bass from messing with the amp, so it can do its best.

Its such an easy and inexpensive thing to do. I do not get why someone wouldn't at least try it, especially when you consider how much some SETs actually cost. An analogy might be buying a nice vintage sports car and then putting terrible tires on it. You'd not be able to appreciate the charm of the vehicle...
I totally get it. What I am saying is that he obviously attains his sense of realism from something else. To each his own. My set up looks nothing like his.

Hi All

I don’t have a problem with people with different opinions,I love them and we should promote them, differences make us better and stronger.

If we want we can criticize every word from everybody ,but what is the purpose of it.Rather build bridges and don’t promote devision. If in every post there is only 0.01% truths and important information it is still positive. If I add this up over all the years it is a lot of good info.

Mathematically, the best ,any person can achieve is 50%,this is absolutely the best and in most cases we humans don’t even come close. So,I make many many ,mistakes daily and have to admit that.

Often people fight but actually they just misunderstand each other, sometimes we express it not accurately enough, sometimes it is a language problem.Even somebody like me,a native German ,but somebody that been educated the whole life in the English language, still have after 60 years ,sometimes problems explaining complex things even explaining something in British English is different to North America English.

I speak 7 languages, all well but none perfect and now I live in Germany and hardly speak English in normal life, except when I go into my company, where we speak mostly English. My English is getting worse, every day.If you don’t practice something daily, you lose it.

Audio is a great hobby and we should support each.I have changed a lot in the past few years. It has become unimportant who’s right, but what is right and if somebody got a better argument, this is great

My first post yesterday,I just wanted to explain why I been absent for 4 years.Looking back ,I should have said nothing and just kept quiet, this is the reason why I never posted the results for the fuses, listening to them in different systems and lab results.I didn’t want to spread more division .

If in any form or way I offended you ,please forgive me,this was never my intention.

Cheers
The laws of Physics and Mathematics do not change. It is only our development and understanding of those laws which change. So never be too quick to malign a new theory or belief, it just may be correct, or at least partially correct. Not everyone agreed with Einstein's theories (amazingly developed without the aid of computers) when they were first published, but now, with the aid of super computers, we know that he was mostly correct and the significance of those theories is mind blowing when you consider the significance in terms of matter and time. So we should welcome new ideas, even those which sound crazy upon first blush, as they may prove out to be at least partially correct or perhaps somehow lead to greater understanding about immutable laws.

Hi Stevet

Very well written. As a scientist you always have to have a open mind and rule no one is ,the possibility of being wrong is enormous and you have to learn to handle failure.Science should never be about ego’s.Science does not know, good or bad, white or black, love or hate,it only knows data, results, numbers, equations.

Believe me ,as a quantum scientist,we work basically with the unknown, the very small things, quarks, electrons, photons, planck length and theoretical physics,it’s all about possibilities and probability.

The research with super conductors started 100 years ago and science made a lot of progress, but we haven’t solved it yet. I am very familiar with the latest research in Munich,MIT ,Tokyo,Zurich and in Korea. The advances are very real, but so far,we can get close to theoretical super conductivity, only with very low temperatures, close to zero Kelvin,or super high pressure.I am actually involved in some and know most of these scientists.

In the last 100 years scientist put in millions of hours and not millions but billions of Dollars in the research. If we ever going to solve it,it will change our world dramatically.

I know how difficult it is and so far I have failed and all the other scientists with me,but I am hopeful.

Nothing is impossible, but very very unlikely that someone who’s background is unknown and can’t be traced back, believe me I tried, will be able to solve this challenge. So claiming something but not providing the proof or data is nothing and the other scientists will eat you like a apple. The competition in science is big believe me.To get funds for your next project is very hard.

As a scientist, claiming something is easy, proving it and convincing other scientists is a different ballgame.

You spoke about Einstein,if you know his history,he had to convince all the scientists in the beginning, almost nobody believed him.Einsteins theories were good, but he really never believed in quantum mechanics. In my personal view, deep, mind boggling science only start with quantum physics, maybe I am biased.

Keep up your commentary,I really value it.

Cheers

Sorry,I forgot.
A very very good female friend and colleague and scientist, passed on,the day before yesterday and I am somehow in great pain.

Here her own words: All good or great scientists are all mad or got Autism. She was a fantastic mathematician and mentor in my early years.

Scientists in my eyes are normal people, they are just trained to look at the world with strange eyes, sometimes a little confused but always realistic.

Cheers

I like what you’ve written, but the lack of paragraphs is a real headache! Consider the reader.
Yeah, couldn't decide double enter or single enter.. Looking back, double would be better.. Edited, thanks for the heads up..

There are two concepts, non technical based people find hard to wrap their heads around and to make it easily perceived by non technical people, simplifications are used, but those simplified versions do not apply to the real world. When people use those simplified versions and consider they are applied to real case, that's when the discussion gets out of tracks.

First one is; while teaching electricity in middle school, it is easier to start with Direct Current (DC) and once the concept is well established, switch to Alternative Current (AC). But AC is so much different than DC. While DC is as the name implies a very direct concept, AC is more like a phenomenon. Bear with me here, even most electric technicians, and I'm raising my hand, some small margin of electric engineers don't understand the concept of AC fully, they just get it enough to pass the class and graduate. I remember asking our middle school teacher the question; if when the (+) port of the power outlet is +220 V, the (-) (i.e. neutral port) should be -220 V. Why does a person get shocked from the (+) port but not the (-) port? That was a naive question, and the question is not a proper one (was a proper one for my middle school mind). Still to this day, I don't have the answer if our middle school physics teacher didn't know the answer to that, or didn't want to spend time and wanted to catch up with curriculum, so brushed me off? AC is in two sections of a HiFi system; power and audio.

Audio / sound is a wave. It is so easy to teach / show it as a single, simple wave. But We know that it is not the real case. Even the simplest sound is a phenomenon itself. Take the center A note which has 440 Hz frequency. But if You make the sound of the simple wave it sounds like the computer sound or the diapason. So what distinguishes A 440 made by a diapason from a guitar, that from a piano, that from a violin? What distinguishes A 440 made by this upright piano from that grand piano or this model of grand piano from that model of the same brand grand piano? It is the harmonics (accompanying frequencies below and above the main frequency) undertones and overtones. So You take one of this note, You take some 2 - 5 other notes accompanying it and make it a chord, You take some 5 - 100 instruments playing notes or chords along with, humans singing along and combine all these frequencies, (make a sum of those waves) and it arrives to Your ear as just one wave. I picture this as thousands of people running through a gate of 20 people wide, and the listener can identify each and all of them. This is what I was mentioning as some kind of magic in my previous post. (Below and attached is still a very simple example)

wav.png

So We are talking about a combination of waves can be summed up and that combination is way more than number of stars in the sky. And moreover, The summed wave has constituents from the lowest frequencies to the highest.

Here I would like to open a paragraph, people say "if human ear can't hear outside 20 Hz - 20 KHz range, what's the point in having a wider range?". The answer is; even the main frequency of that sound is in the range, the harmonics that make that sound may be out of that range. When You leave those frequencies out, Yes the sound is still there, still recognized but not as it's meant to be. Through those months of masks, We still recognized each other, especially the better We knew each other, but that recognition didn't change the fact that almost half of our faces were left out of sight. That's also the reason subwoofers and super tweeters add more room to the soundstage, that We can better recognize each sound now. Consider the example above, those runners through the gate being masked vs. unmasked and We recognize each of them in both cases.

So a HiFi system is expected to meet some very high standards. Like, consider Michelin restaurants. They are limited by number of seats. They serve limited variations of dishes, some even serve taste menu (polite way of saying fixed menu; eat what I give or don't come :]). Whereas a HiFi system is like a restaurant of thousand seats, which has Chinese, Italian, Indian, Japanese, contemporary ... foods in the menu and is capable of serving thousand people at the same time (if needed), even all thousand of them come, sit and order at the same time all a different dish and do this 24/7 without compromise.

Just like the classic joke; car tech says to the heart surgeon, "if I can fix this car engine, I can fix a heart, too, they are similar" and surgeon says "yes, but can You do it, entering from the exhaust pipe, while with all the fluids still in and the engine is running?"

This was one of those few postings that made me ponder for a bit without an answer, just an appreciation.
It adds a completely different and unique approach to the OPs original query.

Thanks for the kind words.. The benefits or weekly regular driving around ten hours, listening to music and thinking and thinking and thinking :]]

Hi Metei

Thinking is so important,so valuable, but you need time, lots of time and time is eventually the strongest and important commodity.Without time, there is nothing, nothing to think about, just nothing.

I was reading a book a few weeks ago,the author ask the question, why don’t we have really great Philosophers today and he came to the conclusion that in the old days Philosophers had so much more time to think.

This is actually a strong statement, but looking at people that researched this subject,it is true.Today people got less time for than ever, almost everyone is stressed and running behind time .

We still got 24 hours a today, and the same 24 hours humans had 1000 years ago_Our way of living has changed. We actually, especially in mainland of Europe, work less hours than our parents,my parents worked more than 8 hours a day, still worked Saturday and had less holiday, but had more free time.

What have changed,,we watch much more tv, we spent hours and hours on social media. Most parents take their children to school by car,I had to walk and basically everyone else, but is was safe. The place I was born in north western Germany was very safe in the past ,today, well well,it is not.Strange gangs have taken basically over, apparently people receiving social grants, but drive brand new Bentley’s and Ferrari’s and disturbing people at night, because our police station closes 6 pm and reopens at 6am .So most people stay at home and don’t go out anymore .I am trying to convince my parents to come and live with me in Switzerland, but so far ,with no success. My wife and myself care for them and they don’t want to go into a old age home.

We go to gym,my parents never heard the word when they were young and didn’t need to, because they worked physically and didn’t need a gym.

We all should make time to think.Out of my experience ,I can say ,that since I semi retired I finally got more time. What so interesting, many subjects starting to make sense to me now.

I am not the one that will say, everything in the past was better, definitely not,we are in general more wealthy than our parents,we live longer and stay fit longer. We travel much more.

Looking at this,we should be the happiest generation ever, but science has revealed,we are not.Interesting

Looking at time in the world of science. For 100 years science looked at time as a constant and Einstein built his space time theory on it,today many, real great scientists are more and more speculating, that time is no constant, because the science always took at the speed of light as a subject we can not change and as a given fact.About 7-10 years it was still a underground noise, from selected scientists, but now not anymore. We seen in certain circumstances, that the speed of light can be changed ,not very much, but by a few % in different mediums, mostly making the speed of light .

Important for us is in my view to use time efficiently to make us happy, whatever this is.
And not make us into Audiophile Gurus, but let everyone to have his own idea and give them space to live it.

Criticism is great,,but always with respect and dignity and honor towards others with different views and opinions.

Time is important

Cheers

Sorry.

A sentence was somehow cut off.

mostly making the speed of light slower in different mediums

I don’t know what happened, most probably my stupid mistake,

Cheers
