Hmm... M500 in low-gain mode is 16.4dB gain. Most normal amplifiers have gain similar to the M500's high-gain mode 28.4dB.Can anyone speak to real-world sensitivity of M7 vs M6?
In terms of listed specifications, sensitivity is 91 for M6 and 92 for M7 (with listed impedance of 4 ohms for both speakers).
My amplifiers have 3 gain settings, and I only prefer it in the lowest gain setting which (despite their 500 WPC rating) leaves some low level recordings - such as SACDs - turned up the max preamplifier volume setting. This also occurs when entertaining
I would be interested if the M7 would play appreciably louder ...
(I know I could turn up the amplifier gain setting, but I don't want to do that)
The problem for you is not the M6 or M7's sensitivity. If you want to run the M500 in low-gain mode and still get 500-1000W out of it, you're going to have to have a preamp that can add that extra 12dB of gain. That would be 4 times the voltage you're getting.
For example, if you're listening to your Select DAC and directly feeding it to your M500, you're getting a maximum 3.57V, with 16.4dB gain would get you 24.8V. 24.8V into a 4ohm speaker would only give you 153W which is obviously much less than the 1000W into 4ohms that your M500 is capable of.
Bottomline is that if you want your source to sound louder, you're going to either let your amp add the gain or you're going to need a preamp to add the gain in voltage.
Your other alternative I guess would be to buy horn speakers with sensitivity of >100dB?
Thinking about it …. sure looks like an amazing design. Would be nice to hear them though I can’t imagine they would disappoint. I suppose it begs the question of what one or two subwoofers plus M6 would sound like in my room vs M7 without subs. I don’t really have a great place to put any subs - so running M7 without subs looks tantalizing, especially since M6 bass in my room is so strong that my guests (and my own ears) have universally said, out loud, “don’t add subs, you don’t need them.”
I’ll bet M7s would sound fantastic in my room, particularly by breaking the sound down to those 5 inch midrange and 9 inch midbass drivers. More than intriguing.

Most with miniscule diameter voice coils and lacking SOTA magnet materials and chassis which affects distortion, linearity, breakup freq. etc. Just having a big bass driver doesn't = more realistic, many variables at play.
IME cabinet material and technology plus driver technology matter a great deal, as much and in many (most?) instances more than cone quantity / surface area.
I agree. Though I do not know much about it, I never said big bass driver equals more realistic. I wrote that a large paper driver without a foam surround MAY sound more realistic. Yes, depending on many factors. My comment was a response to the claim that the latest technology drivers always sound the best. I disagree with such a blanket assertion.
no doubt. and i respect Magico's use of metal, carbon fiber and composites, and their quality of construction.
so far i strongly prefer the accuton ceramic cone sandwich mid range and mid woofers of my MM7's to the Magico proprietary drivers i have heard. the Von Schweikert VR9 Ultra and VR11 Ultra use similar Accuton drivers as the MM7. but not heard the Magico M9 or M7. maybe their drivers are better?
my MM7 cabinets also have their own tech attributes; each cabinet section sealed and using 2000 layers of Baltic Birch compressed with the inner chambers shaped for optimal performance. each tower weighing 600 pounds.
i'm sure the Magico crossover is very good, i like my Evolution.
i do bow to the Magico whole design aesthetic, it's super elegant and a thing of desire. but performance is performance. will the new $400k M7 be better than my 12 year old twin tower MM7's? who knows? based on the talk you would think so.
my guess is that room integration and synergy would be a bigger separator for ultimate performance than actual speaker performance differences.

It must be very difficult to hear drivers and assess their sound without taking into account the rest of the speaker's contribution.

WOW! These pics give some better idea of the size of these new speakers. I really like the overall shape and scale for more typical listener room sizes. The M9s really demand a sizable room, the M7s ought to play well in somewhat more modest spaces (like my room
).
