Hi Everyone -

Magico unveiled their new sound room located at the factory, it is supposed to an amazing experience!

I look forward to hearing what this is all about sometime this upcoming May 2022.

Looks great. Room is everything.

Ok, I exaggerate, but boy, is the room important!!

Without proper room, and set-up within it, you put serious constraints on sheer quality of instrumental tone, fine resolution of timbre, separation of instruments, spatial presentation, bass etc.

my guess is that our own WBF member V-Squared had something to do with this room. at least the power grid portion for sure.

he has a little Magico experience.

Seeing a beautiful room like this makes me wonder about the “trues” that I always listen or read about room treatment.
Many times I read that we shouldn’t use diffusion on the front wall.
But this room is all about diffusion.
I get confused and far from making a good room treatment here, as I can’t try everything.

On the Magico website, Alon touts the “beautiful San Francisco bay” area and this photo:

Now thats the view I’d want out my listening room window! (I’m a little sketchy on my bay area views — is that the bay bridge from Oakland, or GoldenGate from Sausalito? I think the former.)

A good room, like any engineered solution, is always a balance of compromises and design decisions. And acoustic engineers will seldom agree on a “correct” approach. Absorbtion, diffusion, defraction… its all about balance.

Your listening room view is better .... in my view .
All those fast passing cars and trucks cant beat nature.

Ps i think its to much absorption one has to be carefull with ,... draining energy .
Diffusion doesnt drain the sound , it only diffuses the sound energy

A few years ago I was at Magico listening to a comparison between the S5 and the S7. This was in their original listening room, which was very quiet when the door was closed. When the S5 was playing I commented that it sounded just like mine, and Alon Wolf replied 'That's the idea'. Of course mine are in the living room, not a dedicated listening room. However, for the best sound I do need to listen late at night when the air is cooler and the outside noise has died down.

The main question is that we are able to evaluate equipment, but it is not possible to evaluate the treated listening room before committing. Sometimes sound engineers design for their preference, not for the customer preference.

a few observations......

as an ideal listening room, it does look (based on our ability to scale it visually without any reference) narrower than i personally prefer.

OTOH Magico is not big on twin towers, which benefit from width. and likely they will have their gear between the speakers, i prefer to the sides.

it is a similar size to many real world rooms; so that makes sense.

The last room was described as being near ideal. I wonder why they changed anything. I agree with you that the comparison would be interesting.

Goodwins rooms were described as being superb sounding, but more and more people complained at least in private, and the last time I was there they rearranged everything and got rid of the ghastly tube traps that were there for years sucking out the life of the music.

Perhaps Magico is going for a different room sound or their new generation of speakers reacts differently in the room then their earlier speakers did. This is a very interesting announcement in my opinion.

The room dimensions are 20X32, but the actual hard boundaries are 24X36.

It a bigger room than it looks. Very complex design and construction. There will be videos explaining the room construction in the future. There’s a lot more than meets the eyes.

Yes, I thought it was more like 20 feet wide. But the image deceives about the length, it seems longer in it. How high is the room? 12 feet? Hard to tell from the picture.

Yes, the ceiling is 12' but 13.5' to the hard boundary.

The room pic was taken with a wide angle lens, which makes the width look more narrow than it actually is.
