Is that the recording you favor? The one I have on CD (ripped to my library, so I’m not certain which conductor/orchestra at the moment) is a little flat. But it is one of my favorite cello pieces.

I like it. Rostropovich is very good. The Tchaikovsky is also good - a nice set of eight vignettes - it was his first composition for the cello. The Dvorak is a popular piece - there are plenty of other ones on vinyl: Jacqueline du Pré, Paul Tortelier.

Piano can be very satisfying, even as a beginner. No matter my mood I found it a guaranteed way to relax, letting my mind leave the hectic spiral of the modern world. I learned on a upright. Today I would love to have a nice baby grand in the living room, but no longer have the space after we 'down-sized' to a smaller house. It would be cool to have a player model. Or some friends who play strings - get together for Schubert's Trout Quintet. I'll bet a nickle a piano could increase your awareness of the classical world. All cows eat grass.

My mother’s maiden name was Jelinek — a bit more “czech”. My wife and I did a cycling tour a few years back from Prague to Vienna and I rode through the town of my great grandparents. A lot of Czechians (?) migrated to the upper mid-west I believe inspired the New World Symphony.

My brother had a hard, hard life. Like many artists, he never really “fit” into the world. Depression and addiction took their toll, eventually robbing away his creative impulses. But, when those creative juices were flowing he produced real works of art. A few photos of my brother “Buzz” and a few of the guitars he made:

Yes, from raw pieces of lumber. I recall many times my brother would hold a board and rap it with his knuckles to listen to the timbre. This was done very carefully when selecting the wood for the guitar’s top but was also done for wood chosen for back and sides.

That is a skill on a different level then. We spend days deliberating on the re-creation of music and sound, but this...music creation gets the top place on the podium.

Since this is WBF, do you suppose cows have an affinity for ryegrass vs tall fescue, or St. Augustine? Maybe its vintage dependent! Corn fed or grass fed, perhaps the future holds “fed a diet consisting of 100% Kentucky Bluegrass, the beef has a particularly long and smooth finish with hints of minerality.”

Actually no I had never thought of writing that phrase anywhere - it was a spur of the moment inspiration to add a wee bit of humor and see if anyone would catch it. With your response being what it was, I'm not sure how far to go by way of explanation - you may be joshing me and the following is for nought!

We were talking about your visit to Steinway and learning to play the piano. When starting out many piano teachers give lessons in how to read music and play the notes on a piece of sheet music. If you look a music score there is a variety of notation that represents the music and instructions on how to play it. It takes a while to learn the notes and to that end there are mnemonics to help - short phrases that identify the notes in each register, treble and bass.

Each register is represented by five parallel lines on which notes are written; notes can go higher or lower than the lines ... we'll skip that for now.
