KeithR's "Dream Speaker" Search

The powersupply of an amp has everything to do with drive / being able to handle dynamic swings properly etc.
In that sense 1 watt is indeed not the other 1 watt.
1 watt with a large power supply behind it is the way to go in this case .
I would try a set of CAT jl 3 monos on those yg s problem solved i reckon despite being 150 watt or so watts.
Thats if you like tubes off course

I agree that the combination of CAT would be interesting to explore. If they worked on the difficult load of the MBL's, they should work very well on the YG's.

I forgot to mention that they only time I've ever liked YG's was your room at THE Show one or two years ago. I believe they were the Sonya XV. Beautiful presentation, excellent imaging and tuneful base.

Thanks! Hope you can make it down here sometime! As a fellow Strata East fan, I can play you some of those nice Pure Pleasure reissues :)

Each Ampzilla monoblock has a 2000VA power transformer + 100,000 microfarads of electrolytic filtering. 540w into 4 ohms. It's not a flea power supply for its output by any means. Now the CAT JL3 monoblocks... hehe...we'll see how interested Keith is in TWO 27"x18" footprints, 360 pounds of aggregate weight, 32 power tubes. They will be strictly winter amps in the San Fernando Valley. Well, I suppose the Ampzillas become the summer iron.

CAT may be an excellent choice. Another one may be Octave, which has overkill power supplies, with optional external shoe box sized capacitor banks.

I am not saying it is because of crossover parts. The place where I heard a YG sound good, he showed me the crossover and explained why it was complex to drive. I personally can hear it. Nagra sounds flat, with boulder, burmester, plinius, Luxman it drives well, though as mentioned earlier I preferred boulder and Luxman. Nagra was directly compared to burmester 909
Ked please share the technical explanation as to why the crossover network is difficult to drive.

And Keith is listening all day at 95dB? Or just occasionally, and he wants that potential headroom on tap?

When I visit, we see 95dB peaks not infrequently.

Whoa; did I log on to Audiogon by accident?

That's according to Devialet, so it only includes the speakers they've measured... someone posted a link earlier.

Of course, parochially, I would like to hear VTL Siegfried IIs driving Sonja 2.3s or XVs. Purely personally/idiosyncratically I really would love to hear a little bit of tube delicacy on the YG's high frequencies.

With the additional black box i assume no ?
In there they have an additional supply?
But it doesnt come standard you have to buy them extra , but i agree it might do the job as well

If we put together another XV event, you're welcome to bring the VTLs :)
But though not entirely necessary (to me, of course), I do like a bit of tube in there as well. We tend to favor them on the preamp though, REF10 and now Nagra HD Preamp.

If you want to lug the VTLs down, we can try them on my XVs.

My first commercial effort was based around a Fostex 8" fullrange driver. I used two filters with complementary impedance effects to tame the lower treble peakiness without disturbing the impedance curve. Because this (and other things) arguably constituted "cheating", I named it the "Cheetah".

Alas the old playground adage "cheetahs never prosper" proved to be true: I only sold two pairs.

I did however have several Fostex enthusiasts tell me that it was the best they'd ever heard that particular driver sound. I didn't tell them about the cheating.
So you became a lion cheetah! ;)

We once compared the JL2 signature against NAT SE2SE monos on Apogee Grand panels (run full range as sub amps were under repair) and while the JL2 was good we had a clear preference for the NATs. For high power PP tubes though CAT is one of the best I have heard...it’s just not as good as high power SET...on a YG though...??

No, this won’t work at all. They both move in the direction of leanness sonically...

The NAT just doesn't work on the apogee. Heard it on the grands and the full range both. And yeah Flo is someone I deeply admire and respect for how he put in the work to get those grands and get them working at a very young age, but those NATs have to go

Delicacy on high frequencies comes when they are driven properly. Like Krell can do with scintilla but not with horns

The CAT presentation at CES on MBL 101E was anything but "lean." It was awesome full range sound without the brightness I always hear on MBL's. I've heard CAT 3 or 4 times at shows and they were not lean, I think its interesting that you describe them this way. Have you heard them just once or several times? I'm curious if it was an anomaly.
