An Update On Our Site Being Down Yesterday

My biggest fear was that this was another DDoS and if so our web host would force us into the universal block of Hong Kong and China even though WBF now uses a DDoS block at our front door

If that was the case almost certainly we would lose our members from Hong Kong who are regular contributors here

Well I am happy to report that such was not the case

Here is the short bit of info I received

Hi,

We had a networking and internet issues at the Datacenter which caused the issue. The issue is resolved and your website is loading fine now.

This was a network outage issue and it get resolved.

The Labour Party digital infrastructure, official opposition to govt in UK, also went down yesterday.

Good to know - yesterday I was getting the message that access was rejected by the DDoS protection software.

Thanks Steve.
Late last night I was unable to load my thread on the visit to Miks home which was a bit frustrating, but these things happen, and it was all ok by the morning

Steve, you may want to also look at services like incapsula or similar, which basically own your domain, take the hits and deal with them, but route all valid traffic to your own service provider running the software. This will avoid any future ddos attacks, should they happen.

Based on the error messages, Yesterday’s event looked like internal connectivity issues.

Why would I want them to own our domain??

There have been a couple of major wide-area outages the past few days not related to any specific ISP. Not including the local downed power line thanks to a utility crew that took out our cable service (and thus internet) for several days.

The way it works is by routing all traffic through incapsula or similar, and they then funnel the valid traffic to your sub domain. Akamai has similar services. That way, they deal with ddos and not you or your host.

When we say they “own” your domain we mean that all traffic goes to them, not that they own the actual registration.

Audio Shark was going down and coming up at the exact same times WBF was. This was a bigger issue.

here is the message error all saw which made me think again it was a DDoS attack

I was actually getting a mangled clear text error, indicating backend connection issues.

Re Securi Firewall graphic - that's the message I received. Glad it's resolved.

I also received repeated 503s yesterday accessing another large audio site.
