I can't say anything about this disc better than what those who posted reviews on Amazon said. All sorts of classical music and some avant gard kinda stuff. Wish there were more pipe organ music. Something to really shake the house. This isn't all my kind of music, but most of my favorite bands haven't shown much interest in multi-channel formats.

I like the stereo format, but the MC format has you sitting in with the orchestra. The instruments are wrapped around you instead of a 5th row center presentation.

Isn't that the shortcoming of all MC discs. Like you I prefer to be ln the front few rows and not on the stage

I find the fidelity of the 2L recordings to be exemplary. However, I also don't prefer the artificial wrap-around of instruments for classical music. I'm far too indoctrinated in the "audience looking at stage" concept of stereo. AIX records on DVD-A also provide this effect, and it detracts from the experience, IMO.

I agree, the recordings are top notch. I just don't like that gimicky stuff unless it's sound effects. I worked on a surround album last year of ambient electronica. It was far different from others I've done where the only thing in the side/rear channels are reverb/ambience. In that instance, it works. But being up on stage with the orchestra just doesn't work for me. I had too much of that in college.

Hardly. In fact, in classical recordings, it is apparent in the distinct minority of issues. There are a few labels that are committed to such an "on stage" perspective and, while some do generally good work, I am put off by that characteristic.

I can't get enough of multi-channel, I admit my bias freely. I certainly understand why someone would prefer an audience perspective to capture the feel of being in the concert hall, but can't directional microphones be used to capture incoming sound from mutliple directions from the same seat? I don't see why you can't pick a listening position when we're talking about Blu-Ray. The capacity is certainly there to render multiple surround mixes or a high def stereo experience.

Circus Maximus was intended for multi-channel and there's no other way to hear it that does it justice. Ditto with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It was composed for Quadraphonic but was only released in Stereo in the US. Fortunately a mutli-channel SACD was released and it's stunning. You haven't heard DSotM until you've heard it in multichannel.

Stereo was created with the notion that we hear in stereo so audio is better reproduced in stereo, but stereo falls short because we really hear in 3D.

All that having been said, I listened to an SACD on a pair of Revel speakers a couple weeks ago at Madrona Digital in Bellevue and I was blown away. I thought it was multi-channel because those speakers have such amazing prescence, but I was assured it was just those two speakers. I dream of 8 of those playing a blu-ray audio disk.

OK, really going to diverge from the thread here... Have any of you heard of Zaireeka by the Flamming Lips? It's 4 CDs that you play on 4 different sound systems at once. It's a must have for any multichannel audio enthusiest.
