TechDAS tonearm Air Force 10

Today I listened Techdas AF10 tonearm together with new Techdas DIA cartridge. It was a pretty impressive sound, open, detailed, never being harsh or edgy. It was in line with what we heard in Tokyo last year. I spent around 3 hours in local distributor’s show room listening this setup with Kharma Veyron 2D speakers. Volume was very high without distortion and fatigue, I enjoyed a lot. Both the speakers and tonearm/cartridge combo were fabulous. Simply out of this world. My only reservation is the bass. It was great but could have been better to be amazing.

So the AF3 is good enough to get the max out of the AF10 arm? Right now I use the top Graham arm with the TechDas dia cartridge.

No, the AF3P is not good enough to extract the absolute maximum from the AF10 tonearm, but it gets very close. In my opinion, the AF3P comes very close to the top-tier turntables, but it’s not exactly on the same level. There is a huge price difference.

The AF10 is the best tonearm IMO/IME, whereas the Graham is mediocre—actually worse than the SME V.

Which turntables would you consider that can extract maximum from AF10?

IMO Kuzma Safir is not on the same level with top SAT tonearm let alone AS Axiom.

I have auditioned the AF10 in two different systems, the first one was on TLi’s AF0, this combo I love. The second system I auditioned last week, with the AF10 on an AF1P, this system, while still very good, didn’t really do it for me! For some reason I just couldn’t warm up to the AF1, which I have auditioned in a few different systems.

There was one thing that really surprised me in TLi’s system. He put the AF10’s air supply unit on an Seismion active platform, and clear difference could be heard with the Seismion on and off! I think the air supply unit is basically just an air pump, so it is hard to believe the Seismion could make such a difference!

Even placing a simple piece of paper under its feet makes an audible difference, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it sounds better. This isn’t limited to the AF pump unit — every audio component reflects the influence of the platform it sits on.

I agree it doesn’t seem logical. How can a pump unit or an air supply tank possibly affect the final sound? Yet it does. That’s the nature of this hobby.

By the way, which setup did you prefer — the pump unit on the Seismion platform or directly on the floor?

In TLi’s system, since he had already placed the air supply unit on the Seismion, I did not hear it placed on the floor, only with the Seismion on vs off. I preferred the on, it had more air, more stable imaging, and sounded smoother !
