I’ve learned the lesson so I am doing reasonable volume since, like I said around 16-18 in comparison to 20-22 before .

sonrock. Volume settings on your pre are irrelevant. Loudness (db's) do. 100db+ for very short periods of time can do major damage. Just buy yourself a sound pressure level meter from Amazon and follow the posted guidelines on the internet. Your ears will thank you. Best.

Regarding listening levels, on my PILIUM Alexander, my volume range typically varies between 3 and, in rare and extreme cases, 18.

On very uncommon occasions I push it to 17 and 18, and that’s mainly for analytical purposes, to evaluate how the room behaves with specific tracks that contain highly complex and dynamic passages.

In day to day listening, the setup fully engages me even at 3 and 4, especially late in the evening or at night.
My usual average listening level ranges between 9 and 12, depending on the recording and the material.

MSB DACs, provide two output modes: High / Low.
I personally prefer the High output mode, because it offers greater drive, improved micro dynamics, and a stronger sense of authority and control over the signal, all without sacrificing refinement.

I downloaded the db meter app yesterday and see in my normal listening session, the loudness varies between 60-90db when the volume is set at 16 on the pre depending on different parts of the track/music. So I will keep it within this range and won’t go above 100db . It’s very easy to do so with rock, jazz and electronic music, I just need to be mindful!
