My wife and I were out to dinner with several other couples tonight in Indianapolis and we were bemoaning the loss of our favorite French restaurants, many of which closed over the past decade.
We thought it might be fun to find an outstanding French restaurant and take a weekend trip to wherever it is, but no one (and we are a well-travelled bunch) had a strong favorite to nominate.
Can anyone recommend a truly great French restaurant within maybe four or five hours of Indianapolis that you're confident would be worth the trip? We're not talking a bistro, but an all-in top-flight dining experience.
Thanks!

I live in UK but try the Michelin guide, it's pretty reliable.

I sometimes visit my friend in Chicago and we like to go to Pierrot Gourmet at the Peninsula hotel for brunch or lunch or dessert but their hours are quite limited so no dinners. While the food is excellent. I don’t even think they take reservations. Not sure. I don’t know if it’s worth driving specifically to Chicago for given how costly it is downtown. But if you’re already in town, highly recommended.

Michelin guide doesn’t have any stars for any Chicago French restaurant. I generally find the no star no bib gourmand restaurants on the guide to be quite hit or miss. Their accuracy is not superior to Eaters online. I have not been to any other Chicago French restaurants for dinner so I can’t comment.

I live in Canada (but not Quebec) and I find it’s difficult to get truly great French food. Good luck.

The Maisonette in Cincinnati was #1 in the Midwest for about 50 years (until they closed in 2005).

Midwest is a haute cuisine desert (one s not two).

Nevertheless, a few places do turn up. There are also a few in the Nashville area. They’ll turn up if you inquire using Google. People seem to like this one https://chateauwestrestaurant.com/.
