What are these large white objects with hexagon shaped metal centers near the listening chair?

Horn-loaded subs from NNNN - I’m experimenting with them right now.

The two smaller ones in front of the listening chair blend seamlessly with the big midbass horns and extend down to around 50 Hz, perfectly time-aligned to the millimeter.

The large one on the left side of the listening chair takes over from there, all the way down to about 20 Hz. It’s a massive sub - nearly 200 lbs - capable of 137 dB continuous and 143 dB peak at 23 Hz. But what really makes it special isn’t just the power; it’s the high sensitivity, speed, and overall finesse.

What’s truly unique about this setup is that these subs feature sub-cardioid dispersion, meaning they don’t excite room modes. I actually removed most of my bass treatment - I had a ton of it - and the sound improved even further.

And because it’s a nearfield bass system, you get this kind of frequency response:

Once you get spoiled with that kind of bass, everything else sounds boomy and colored.

Note: I have a second big sub (NNNN Devor 23) sitting in a wooden create here. Need to get help installing it on the right side of my listening chair :).
(as a bonus, the big subs in such a close proximity also make side room reflections nearly irrelevant - yes, that causes other issues but overall a very desirable result in this particular room)

I don't have anything nearly as impressive to update my system photos (yet), but I did pass a major milestone today -- my purpose-built music room is finally ready to start moving into:

MusicRoom.JPG

Dimensions are 21' x 16' x 9' tall (about 7m x 5m x 3m). Double sheetrock inner wall with the layers of 'rock separated by ASC's visco-elastic Wall-damp pad and strips, hung on damped resilient channel. Concrete slab floor. Double layer ceiling. STC-rated doors.

I don't know who is happier -- me for getting this summer-long DIY project finally done, or my wife for finally getting her living room back.

More to follow, soon I hope. Speakers will be moving in tomorrow with the rest to follow ASAP.

Congratulations on this truly impressive, magnificent listening room.

Don't the closely spaced subwoofers increase diffuse sound through reflections? This worsens the IACC (Interaural Coherence Coefficient) and reduces or shifts the spatiality.

You can't see that in the frequency response. I take such measurements with Acourate. Sorry for going off topic.

Good question. I actually don’t rely much on frequency-response measurements for bass. Other than identifying room modes, they’re pretty useless for bass in a small room. Time domain measurements tell me a lot more. I use a CLIO 12 measurement system from my DIY speaker-building days.

That said, these NNNN subs behave very differently from conventional subwoofers. I first experimented with the NNNN Trent transmission-line subs. I tried building an 8-sub array, but my room had other plans and ultimately won the fight!

The Devor installation turned out to be much more complex, but also far more successful in my space. I’ve tried other subs here - including some high-end RELs - but none of them ever really worked for me.

@nenon how did you know about theese Norwegian subs?
Well, we’ve never met, but it’s actually thanks to you!
I’ve been following your horn-speaker journey through @bonzo75 ’s videos and articles. There was a Norwegian forum thread discussing DIY plans for your big subs. Those wouldn’t have worked in my room, but they led me to Rune / NNNN / @Solypsa — so officially: thank you!

I´ve tried to tell the hifi community, if they want proper subs and not toys, theese are the ones
Not easy to set up, but I completely agree!
A funny story - I don’t even need the power these things can deliver, but during the break-in process I used to crank them up and step outside for a bit. After a few sessions, I discovered a massive leak in the bathroom. Turns out the toilet’s water container had cracked. I still wonder whether it was the Devor23… or just a coincidence! :)

What about a Devor 16?
Of course I’ve considered that!

I’ve measured my room many times and explored every possible placement. I kept trying to convince myself I could make it work, but the truth is that the Devor 16 is just too massive for my space. I’ll need a much larger room before I can give one a proper home.

At one point I even thought about putting one right behind my listening chair. After experimenting with the smaller Devor23, though, it became clear that position wasn’t suitable for any NNNN Devor sub.

There were also technical hurdles - the horn inside the Devor16 is simply too long to achieve proper time alignment. The only way would have been to delay the main speakers, which was a hard no from the start.

So yes, I tried really hard to find a way to make a Devor16 work, but in the end, it just wasn’t the right tool for my setup.

Proud of you, Steve! Nicely done!

Thank you, Vassil. Very much appreciated.

No rest for the wicked (and I was very very wicked in a previous life) -- today I got my speakers out of storage and moved the Tube Traps into the room. Still in progress but here's a snapshot from an hour ago:
