I figure this fits better here compared to the dedicated car forum, as it is not really about the cars themselves but more so the audio systems. I'm talking about factory audio systems rather than aftermarket or upgraded systems which are an interesting topic all their own but not really a good fit here.

What cars have folks heard with decent or even great sounding audio systems? I was surprised when I learned that there are so many actual high-end audio brands doing collaborations with car companies lately. Some are better than others though. So far the better ones which come to mind:

Latest generation Lincoln Continental: they offer a version with a 13 speaker Revel setup, and then the top of the line option is a 19 speaker Revel Ultima system. It sounds nice and clear if somewhat lacking in authority along with low end impact. Great for jazz though! Lincoln/Revel have different configurations for their various models, I think the Aviator or Navigator SUVs have around 28 speakers but I haven't heard those.

Latest generation Cadillac Escalade: it's an AKG system with two versions available, the top one using 36 speakers. I spent limited time with this one, it seemed more rich than the Lincoln Revel system but also slightly less detailed.

Volvo: many of the more recent Volvo models offer B&W systems as options on the highest trim levels. I've heard these in the S60 sedan and the XC90 SUV, and to my ears both sounded exceptional. Very well balanced, great imaging, excellent detail but not harsh. I'm not even a B&W fan most of the time but I loved the results in both Volvo models. Side note, even Volvo's lower range Harman Kardon systems (which are an option above the base audio but below the B&W) sound very good to me.

Acura RLX: this is a discontinued model, was formerly the flagship of the Acura line until 2020 when they dropped it. The top audio option here was a 14 speaker Krell system which I thought sounded pretty nice. Very immersive, clean, neutral, again slightly thin like the Revel Ultima in the Lincoln Continental but still very nice. I also noticed that Krell made some systems for more recent Hyundai models like the Tucson and Santa Fe. I heard the latter and did not like it at all, very much inferior to the older Acura Krell.

What else have you heard that is worth discussing? I know Jeep used McIntosh for a few of their nicer models recently, Lexus has been using Mark Levinson forever, BMW formerly used Bang & Olufsen but later switched to Bowers & Wilkins, and Mercedes has Burmester as an option in a certain models.

There is dedicated YT channel for OEM car audio reviews:

My personal fav is Bowers & Wilkins Sound System in Volvo XC90. It is fantastic.

I also like the Burmester sound system in my wife's Cayenne 3, although truth to be told - I have recently replaced it with ScanSpeak tweeters and sub, Helix i7 mids and woofers and ARC Audio Blackbird amp with DSP. Sounds even better, but this is already a proper hi-end setup with a price tag to match.

Thanks, I'll check out that channel when I get a moment.

I forgot about Burmester in the Porsche lineup. I heard Mercedes GLE (I think that was it) with a Burmester system, it was ok but nothing too amazing.

I also forgot to mention in my earlier list the Land Rover Meridian systems. Which from my experiences are decent to pretty good, not great.

Maserati's Sonus faber in-car systems won EISA Best In-Car OEM Premium Audio System two years in a row. 2021-2022 for the Maserati MC20, and 2022-2023 for the Maserati Grecale. I have a Grecale Trofeo with the 21-speaker Sonus faber High Premium system. Car stereo people think it lacks that artificially elevated car stereo 'slam'. Audiophiles marvel at its resolution and natural sound.

I have Burmester in my Panamera, it’s good but nothing exceptional

Premium car audio has come a long way and all but killed the after market experience
The vehicles I’ve owned past few years have very good sound but you can’t convince me that a tiny room with glass all around is near a home audio system
I do marvel at how some songs appear to have sounds I’ve not heard before but when I do play them st home
it is there. just a little eq on any home system that is good enough blows away any car experience I’ve ever heard.
let me know when car audio can play with windows open driving lol
but I will admit they do sound sound great at times

Yes it is a very difficult acoustic environment. No doubt about that. Many of us think our listening rooms are sub-optimal but a car interior is always going to be terrible! Still, as you said they have come a long way and manage pretty great results these days.

I also think part of what killed the aftermarket was simply the evolution from single or double DIN openings to proprietary dashes with custom head units, often integrating climate controls or other things into what would have formerly been strictly audio controls. That makes things much more complex if you want to upgrade.

Good to know, I was considering it in a Macan GTS. Might stick with Bose

I have never been at a home system that came anywhere near close to the impact and power of a car system. I have been in cars that literally turn your body into jello. And they are crystal clear. I find it shocking how well aftermarked units can play.

I recently traded my Audi, which had the premium bang and olufsen system for a Lexus equipped with the Mark Levinson system. The B&O was OK, but nothing special and I never thought it had a really premium sound. The Levinson system is a substantial improvement. More punch and greater transparency and it’s really quite good, at least for car Audio.
My favorite system was my Panasonic eight track tape player with the biggest baddest ugliest speakers I could afford which I installed in my 1973 Plymouth Fury about 50 years ago. Undoubtedly the cause of hearing loss, listening to Mississippi Queen as loud as it could play.

New cars make it hard to modify them.. No way to mount a head unit. Running cable is impossible. Electrical is hard to attach too. Its a battle. So we are stuck with what we get.

And, it takes a lot of tuning to dial one in. Best, or maybe, easiest to use whats stock.

Speaking of Bose, I find them wildly variable in terms of performance. Often times they sound dismal, yet in some instances they can be decent or even reasonably good. Sometimes this aligns with the general quality and price of the car in question but not always.
