Network Acoustics - Tempus network switch

I received my Tempus last night. I didn't even try any 2-channel audio through my Roon/Ayre setup yet. I wanted to watch some of the TNF NFL game plus it was movie night with the wife.
I don't know how these guys (and others who offer high end networking components) do it. It goes against almost everything you read on the internet about networking and that it either works, or it doesn't. There is no grey area and nothing can change the 1s and 0s for better, or worse - except a bad cable or switch. Well, I can honestly say that's complete rubbish.
Great to hear you have such an amazing experience with the Tempus.

@adamaley Exactly! Just have a look at the Roon forum for example. It's all about the "bits are bits" and neither a switch nor ethernet cable etc. will ever make any difference. Funny to see many are repeating these statements without even trying out a decent switch or network cable.
So it's always good to see people, even when not expecting to hear a difference, trying out things like @audiom3 and experiencing what potential there is in a networking setup.

Yes, it's a no-win argument as neither can prove the other wrong. We are imagining it because they can't measure it, yet....yet being the key word. Just call me a sucker because I will not be giving this thing back.

Maybe it's the PSU?
Having played with various LPSs, I would assume it is. Not only rejecting noise that would otherwise go into the switch but also blocking switch noise from getting into other gear. At least that is my working assumption.

Well as others (and Rob himself) have said, this thing sounds even better after some break-in. Mind you, I honestly have not experienced that before in other components. Sure, they sound different when cold vs warm but that is pretty obvious - especially with anything from Ayre.
When I sat down to listen to 2-channel music for the first time last Friday, it was a tad harsh sounding. I would say it was a bit better than when I ran the SW-10 in it's place but nothing like the video and audio changes I experienced with my video streamer and even live TV apps. My 2-channel listening was certainly more dynamic with the Tempus but the SQ wasn't thrilling me through a fiber connection. I was thinking that maybe fiber vs fiber is a very minor step up at best... A few days later, I listed to many of the same tracks again and they sounded quite a bit different. I prefer to listen loud, so warts (or lack thereof) really show themselves when you start winding the system up. The bite was all but gone and now, the bass coming out of my Focus SEs is like an octave deeper now. Easy to feel when you're seat is massaging you. My MCH sub is even more thunderous when listening to movie soundtracks, Atmos music or watching a ripped bluray concert. It is astounding as now I have to trace down a few rattles in my media room. It was a bit boomy before run-in and I felt like I needed to lower the x-over point.
The oddities are the 100M ports. I have one hooked up to my LG OLED and it is buggy as heck when I switch to my OLED input and try to watch an app. I would say it takes a full 8-10 seconds to lock onto a stream. The video just freezes and after a second or two, plays another frozen frame and then again before it starts any audio and the video starts flowing smoothly. Whereas before, it might have taken 1-2 seconds to play video from just about any app. So, not sure what that's all about. LG's only have a 100M ethernet port, so this seemed like a natural fit in the 100M port. I'll be moving my Nintendo Switch 2 from a 1G port to the 100M port to see if the OLED improves.
The good news for anyone who may try this switch on a fiber LAN. It took my current fiber transceivers without any issues. And I have a bit of a Frankenstein type setup. The transceiver in the Tempus feeding my Lumin U2 is a Finisar 1471 (10G), while the one in my Lumin is a Finisar 1318 (1G). I chose this combo after a lot of experimentation with the LHY switch and the fact that the Lumin will not accept any 10G transceivers whatsoever. And I am pretty certain, the input transceiver from my Mikrotik 10G switch is also a 10G Finisar 1471. I have bought switches over the years that would not work with these transceivers, so that is very good news.
I had a spare Swiss Digital Fuse Box around, so I am using that with the Tempus. I removed the stock fuse before even plugging in the Tempus for the first time, so I don't know the true impact this might have made. But knowing it made a great change with my Lumin U2 and an older Zidoo video streamer that I sold off, I am certain it added some to the excellent dynamics.

10G Finisar 1471
The Finisar 1471, and the newer 1475 are dual rate; 1G and 10G. They will output whatever a compatible port can manage.

One thing to watch out for is that a 1G device cannot decode a 10G data srream. If you use a 1471 in the Mikortik, it will output 10G, which the Lumin can't decode, no matter whar SFP is mounted.

Actually, that's not true with Mikrotik. Just click off 'auto negotiation' and it connects at 1G. I just confirmed that I am using a 1471 in both Mikrotik and the Tempus. I did a lot of trial and error a few years back. I might be rusty on exact combos but I tried just about everything to figure out what worked best and more importantly, what sounded best.

Sorry, you're correct. Some managed switches allow a 10G port to output 1G, with a dual rate SFP+. It's tricky to configure, beyond what most audiophiles can manage. I have a Mikrotik CRS-305 for my desktop system. That tip may come in handy some day, because I have a 1G FMC downstream on one of the ports. I can have my son to do the tricky part. ;)

Plugged in a Tempus yesterday, still in a bit of disbelief, its amazing.

I inserted it between a Mutec clocked EtherRegen and an Innuos Statement,
The EtherRegen is fed by fiber from an OpticalModule that is fed ethernet from an EnglishElectric S8 that's connected to an EERO 7Max by a NA ENO Ag filter. The ethernet cables are all SOtM with their filters. SFP's and fiber are Sonore's with
Finisar Multimode SFP's. The OM and ER are powered by an Uptone JS-4 which replaced a JS-2 with obvious benefit.

After it breaks in I will try moving the SFP from the ER to the Tempus to bypass the ER.

I’d suggest: give “ethernet only” solution a try. I mean, router > ethernet > Tempus > ethernet > Statement. I also found the Muon Pro filter a perfect companion for the Tempus.

I‘d suggest trying that too if cable length allows. And ENO2 or Muon Pro is great combo
I have a 25 foot run of fiber that is inconspicuous and easy to bend around my gear. I can't see running an ethernet cable in its place but I understand and appreciate cable has a different sound signature than fiber. I had been universally not a fan of fiber until I tried the Sonore SystemOptique.

I am considering the Muon Pro System but want to pump the brakes and let the Tempus settle in for 2-300 hours.

hey audiom3,
Is the finisar 1471 module used on Tempus switch?
If it is, is there any issue when rebooting the switch (with the 10G module inserted of cos)

The PSU that Tempus uses is not just a normal SMPS so dismissing it based on that would be a mistake. Its apparently a custom design specific for routers and switches. The standalone Origin power supply recently got a rave review by Jason Kennedy.

I had an Uptone JS-2, fantastic and versatile LPS for DAC's e.t.c but I found it was NOT very good with switches, routers or NAS devices. I definitely want to try the new JS-4 though.

Try powering your Tempus switch with the JS-4. You'll be in for a treat over NA's stock SMPS-based Tempus PS.
Completely inappropriate for you to come into another manufacturers product thread and say they use a stock SMPS when they do not.
