Actually the more affordable options to the MELCO were around first.
I recall that chatter about similar but considerably less expensive alternatives. Couldn't remember which came first. My guess is Melco out muscled the others with their marketing, making it appear like they were 1st to the party. A/B comparisons were easy to perform with the Optical Modules. To my ears there was a touch more believability using the Melco C1 vs fiber.

Honestly I could not tell the difference in my systems, from the Melco to the Amphenol . Now I have completely moved to the Edison FiberBox II. Huge improvements.
 
I have the Amphenol and have been very impressed.
 
I’m also using an Amphenol DAC with 25 AWG and have been thoroughly impressed by its performance. The clarity and detail it brings to my audio setup have exceeded my expectations
