Field Coils for Audio Systems

If it weren't for the price:confused:, I could live with that sounds really good

I’ve had one of those Feastrex amps.. really impressive sound for a push pull using rather simple tubes (same Finemet iron cores I use in my own products)

I have a pair of the Feastrex Nf 5ex drivers and have used them in a box similar to the second picture above and also a cabinet that Volti audio made (they used the non-field coil version) that was called Veretta…I acquired the cabinets and used my fieldcoil version Feastrex.

I liked both applications quite a bit when used with my preferred SET amps and listening to Jazz, blues, vocals…smaller scale.

I continue to use fieldcoil based drivers from Wolf Von Langa and Maxonic so am a fan of what the fieldcoil technology brings to the music.

This experience once more made it clear to me field coil is in my future...
Klangfilm Europa Junior (1930-ies) at BAM 2025...what has gotten into mankind to leave that path ;-)

Cost cutting, laziness, and ignorance.
Every speaker that sells for over ~$50K should be field coil. Permanent magnets offer No value beyond cost and space savings.

I agree. In my experience field coil doesnt automatically make every driver a winner, but it certainly provides benefits. At the price points and amount of technology and price points some driver designs already possess.. adding field coil is not *that* complicated or expensive.

Also, permanent magnets lose their magnetism over time, correct?

Alnico does, and you need someone to remag it. Buying ferrite or neodymium should be fine. Also will matter if buying vintage, not for those who are buying new drivers unless they are think their children and grandkids are going to want the speakers.

If you think Kraftwerk is muzak that is your opinion, you do not have to listen to it ;-)
They actually were amongst the pioneers of electro and techno.

I wonder if anybody will ever do a field coil full range ribbon speaker. Clarysis calling?

Maybe somebody has but I haven't heard about it.

Do pay attention , I was posting about the efficacy of the audio on the video … Not the genre !.

With the number of magnets needed this would be pretty impractical

Only ALNICO and only if you hit it with large pulses. A lot of the old PA and theater speakers probably need a recharge because they were driven hard. Home use speakers don’t see much as levels are significantly lower.
