If you are truly interested in conditioning, saving and rehabbing your feet you might consider gradual implementation of VIBRAM 5 Fingers. However they should not be used if your feet are still in the acute stages of an injury.
Certainly more interesting than shoes . But we also need something to walk on....I read the thread title wrong, and I thought it was about this.....
