IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT RE SLOW WBF SERVERS--PLEASE READ FOR INFORMATION RE FIXES NECESSARY

Good Morning WBF Members

There has been an ongoing thread here at WBF re there slowness of our servers and loading the site.

First off, thank you for reporting this as we have been aware of the problem for the past 6 weeks. It seems WBF is truly coming of age as we have experienced huge growth in membership and use of the forum this past year. Over the years we have changed our server type to accommodate our needs. For the past 2 years we have used a twin CPU VPS as a server and this has satisfied our needs admirably until recently. A recent Google search of Whats Best Forum under "audio forums", "high end audio forums "and "best audio forums" these past few weeks have shown WBF anywhere from 1st to 4th position on any given day. For this, Ron, Julian and I offer our sincerest of thanks.

It has become clear when discussing with our web host that not only have we outgrown our server and memory capacity but we find we need a great amount of upgrade.

Over the past 4-6 weeks we have been in discussion with our web host re options and this week we have finalized our decisions. Very soon we will be switching to our own dedicated server which is a brand new generation with 8 CPU's and enough memory to last us for years to come. This process however will involve several down times of the forum to allow for the transfer of data across to the new server. Initially we must first update our MySQL which should take only a few hours but we are guessing. After this our web host will transfer our data to the new server which will be available to Julian, Ron and I tomtrouble shoot to make certain nothing gets broken. We have found over the years that transferring data to a new server is always a crapshoot because even with the best of intentions something might break and disrupt the smooth flow of the forum. So until such time as we can confirm this nothing further need be done. However when the day comes when we go live with this new server we once again will incur forum down time until the transfer of data is complete. IOW we expect 2 and possibly 3 separate forum downtimes to complete this transition. We do not have a firm date as of this moment but once we do , our lan is to post another announcement here as well as sending out a group email to all members to when the down times will be expected . We anticipate probably to start this in the coming week so look for the announcement and email

Going forward we feel very comfortable in the decisions we have made. This is a very expensive move up for us but we made up our minds that this is our best alternative . We are even considering adding a back up hard drive in case there is ever a system failure. With all of this in mind there should be a noticeable marked uptick in the speed of the forum as well as regaining full functionality of our 3 symbol Elastiserch. Elastisearch has been slow for months and this is because of the memory it uses . WE have been Tod by our web host that its functionality should return to normal. If elastisearch continues to be problematic we will in all likelihood remove it and go back to standard 4 symbol or more searches

We wish to thank everyone for their understanding and patience because at the end of the day it is the overwhelming use of the forum by everyone that has brought us to an almost standstill. We thank everyone for making Whats Best Forum such a huge success.

Stay tuned

It has become clear when discussing with our web host that not only has WBF outgrown our server and memory capacity, but we find we are in need of an upgrade to speed up the delivery of our website.
The total number of our members has increased each year, and the last 12 months has seen a big uptick (a great thing). Also the amount of 'floating' non-members or members not logged in using the forum has hugely increased, upwards of 5K online at one time.
We are totally dedicated to bringing a great forum experience to everyone, thus we have decided now is the time to move to a new and more powerful dedicated server just for WBF's use.
We get more CPUs, more memory and more disc space!
The upgrade will be in 3 stages, as they move the files and database, and test at each stage. The Apache server software, PHP and MySQL will also be updated and upgraded at this time.
Please take note of the schedule, we have tried to drill down to accurate timings, but we are reliant on the hosting companies expediancy.
All of the WBF Team thank you for your understanding and your support.

Come on guys, donate some $$ to help off set the costs...
It would be great if those opportunists who use WBF to make money step up!

Was the first part of the upgrade completed?

YES !!!

Today they updated MySQL and the forum is actually somewhat faster already. Julian and I are going to test this for the next one week as we were advised to run the updated MySQL for a week to ensure that no problems with our database.

Next week at around the same time the forum will again be down as they move us into the ew server where once again this will be a test site for Julian and I to ensure nothing is broken

Should all be well the following week at around the same time we will go live with the new server.

Thanks to everyone for being understanding through this very large transition. As stated we will be moving from a VPS with 2 CPU's to a larger and much faster server which has 8 CPU's and we have added what we feel is sufficient memory to last us many years.

This growth has been quite steady but nonetheless present each month such that we have outgrown our existing server and we require much more RAM. Prior to updating MySQL they also deleted 3 test sites that Julian and I had them create for us as we were updating the forum. We also noticed that when these were deleted the forum speed was markedly quicker so we look forward to a very streamlined server in the next few week to make browsing on the site speedy

Finally should anyone see something broken or not functioning please reach out to either myself or Julian to attend to the matter

Is the search function disabled during the server upgrade period?

We have found a few broken functions that they are working on. What annoys me is the problems with Elastisearch which cost us a lot of money to purchase as it searches down to 3 symbols. This just is being found since we did the first update a few days ago. They are working on a fix but I have told them if forty the moment they can't fix Elastisearch they should remove it and go back to the normal search function that comes with Xenforo

and how about this.....they just found , they think the reason why elastisearch does not work and hopefully it will be reinstalled when it is but for now the Xenforo search function is fully operational

Was part 2 of the upgrade delayed? I didn't notice the site being down at all yesterday.

So here is a preliminary update. The Elastisearch database has been rebuilt and is functional. Our concern is that until we move to the new server, Elastisearch might break again so please report any changes that don't look right. Ive tested and I can search down to 3 symbols

here is the next update for everyone. We have successfully moved a mirror version of the forum to our new turbo charged dedicated server late last night. Presently Julian and I are testing alll of our plug ins to make sure that nothing has broken. We anticipate some time for the two of us to check the functionality of all of our plug ins and so far everything looks good.

Once we have verified that everything is fully functional we will go live with that mirrored version. We also will always have a back up version of the forum which will not reside on our new server but off site for better security and back. up if anything ever failed

Stay tuned for further updates. We have one unresolved issue that we need to test as there is some concern that in order for everything to be completely functional we might need to update to the current version of Xenforo. Doing forum updates is always a risk as inevitably some thing(s) fails and script needs to be rewritten.

We have noticed that the changes we have made so far on our old server has resulted in speeding up the forum which I hope everyone has noticed.

A brief update. Site was down for several hours today as they continue to work on our Xenforo update. Also whenever an update is done we literally have to check the entire site to make sure nothing had broke in the update. We actually are further ahead with all the checks as everything has proved OK. Once we complete that we then have to recheck and reinstall all of the current versions of our plug ins. We hope to also have that finished sooner than we anticipated. We are hoping to go live with our new server and current version of Xenforo sooner as well. Thanks to everyone for being patient. It is a challenging process that often result in a crash such as this morning

I woke up this morning and found the site down. Normally they can get us up again quickly. however today’s crash involved some extra other part. The good news is that we feel we can go live with the new server and Xenforo update sooner than we expected. It’s these unexpected happenings that make us pull the hair out of our heads.
