What's the best radar detector?

In Canada it seems like they always have both going at all times. So they radar always tips you off so you can slow down by the time you're in range of the laser.

That's super convenient for drivers, but doesn't seem all that bright on the cops end...

I'm not a huge fan of speeding tickets, so I'm not complaining. :)

$4k seems to be high for an Escort 9500CI, must have front and back jammers. I've heard horror stories about cops ripping custom installs out of the car when the drivers get caught driving exceedingly fast. Installers do excellent jobs in making the installations hard to notice, but highway cops are dealing with these everyday and can keep up with the smarts of the installers. I bet many of them are reading 6speedonline just to get an idea about custom installs :D

I am still using an Escort 9500IX, was really impressed with it until I got nailed with it running, got my relatively new vehicle (thanks goodness not my Porsche) impounded for a week, an experience that cost me close to $2k, so has slowed down quite a bit.

now my wife is complainig that I am not driving aggressive enough (wait, she has more speeding tickets than me)

What's the best radar detector?

Somebody else driving the speed you want to go about a mile out in front of you.

I have used a Valentine One for many years. I think the latest version of the Valentine One is probably the best one-piece radar detector available today.

But no device provides sufficient warning against laser. I was driving over a hill and my car naturally accelerated down the hill. The Valentine One emitted one short beep and then went silent. There was no bogey on the device's counter. I saw no police car.

It was not until at least a quarter of a mile later that I saw the police car which painted me and which pulled out to intercept me.

It was an annoying episode because, but for the few mph increase in speed coming down the hill, I was not even speeding. It was a trap!

Well I've scheduled to get the detector installed. Luckily this ALSO included laser diffusors on front and rear.

I have used a Valentine since 2003. The rear radar detection is a key advantage of the valentine. No better detector, imo

I will modify this statement....for a portable radar detector, no professional install...Valentine. For best system ...passport 9500ci with laser shifting which currently resides in my sports car.

Shifter = jammer... just be careful where you use it! If a cop has a laser on you and it won't lock it's going to be pretty obvious what's going on...

On the passport, you are warned about a laser and you can hit mute to temporarily disengage jamming after you slow down....allowing the cop to eventually get a speed fix on you before you pass him.

Very cool, Bruce! Good luck with it!

Although speeding appears to be a civil infraction it is in fact a crime. In DC 30 MPH over the limit can get you arrested .

When I was in California, I received my one and only speeding ticket ever on the freeway. When I took the traffic school they said anything over 25 mph over the limit would be a misdemeanor (?). So you are definitely right.

Of course I am sitting in that class hearing everyone's confession including these very nice and proper looking people saying they were going 70 in 25 mph regions in Palo Alto!!! What was interesting is that most of the people had gotten tickets in the same areas and one of those was Palo Alto downtown. So I learned to go super slow there no doubt contributing to my lack of further tickets on my driving record! :)

I just received my new Passport Maxx2 yesterday to replace my aging and banged up X50 blue. I am anxious to give it a try. I typically put 50,000 to 60,000 miles a year driving the highways.

When I was young/dumb in my late teens/early twenties, I was a speed freak. I was also a champion motorcycle racer at the time, but I digress... I had racked up so many tickets, my license was suspended and I had to serve some jail time.

Knocking on wood, I have not received another speeding ticket in over 20yr. Thankfully I got out of a couple the past few years!!

I get one every 5 years or so, but I do speed everywhere.

The last cop that pulled me over decided to pull me over vs an RTD bus that was going exactly the same speed I was, f'in bus was trying to pass me before the road narrowed to one lane and we were about to go up a 17 mile long canyon... Cop said with my car (WRX) and detector that I'm "one of those people that speed everywhere" and he was going to take this opportunity to make sure I get a ticket. I almost filed a formal complaint over the overt profiling, but whatever... he only caught me 11 over the limit, fine was < $100 and 2 points.

Ouch. That would make me upset.

I honestly think the country has a problem with speed limits that are severely dated for cars that are rarely on the road anymore. But I did just live in Mt where it's mostly 80mph, and a good time back there wasn't one. (Feds became some punk dicks that said you have a speed limit or not funding, despite no difference in accidents)

The best radar detector is cruise control set to 5 over the speed limit. If you must go faster than this, you are a danger to me and my family. There is no excuse for this behavior and your liability is not worth the risk. You could lose everything you own if you get sued. Same if you use a cell-phone while driving. In this case, you could lose your freedom too.

I assume radar detectors are used largely or exclusively on empty roads. The only person at risk in such a situation is the speeding driver.

Fortunately even people who seek in many areas of life to impose their values on others cannot outlaw acceleration!

Floor it, Bruce B! Floor it, Christian!:D
