What's Spinning Tonight?

What could be more corny on Father’s Day in the US than to play ABBA, a pop group I used to listen to as an undergraduate 45 (ahem) years ago. I can see the younger WBF members (are there any?) cringing already. But gosh darn it, ABBA can belt a tune. They still make me smile after all these years. When they sing “I have a dream”, you want to believe them in these much darker times when war seems to be breaking out in more places than we’d like to see. Go ahead, WBF, play ABBA today! This is the reissued double album vinyl of their greatest hits.

When ABBA sing “Money, Money, Money, It’s a rich man’s world”, the irony is thick. 45 years after they sang the song, the words could not ring more true. I work in AI in the Bay Area and make a decent living, but I’m no billionaire. One of the students of one of my students in my former academic lab is just 27 and a billionaire. He runs one of the new AI search engines. Welcome to our new world.

As a Swede you always get a smile when you hear ABBA - They are still awesome :D. Sad to say their sound technician, responsible for the classic ABBA sound, Michael B Tretow passed away just about a month ago. May he rest in peace. Nobody lives forever, but his legacy will always remain, and so does ABBA.

Good choice on Father’s Day (in the US).

I was always surprised how many songs ABBA produced for other musicians, for example this one from the ABBA musical "Chess"

Not really an ABBA musical in itself, but co-written by Björn and Benny (music) and with the British gentleman Tim Rice (text). Inspired by the two Grand Masters, Viktor Kortjnojs and Anatolij Karpovs chess careers.

Yes indeend, ABBA (that is Björn and Benny then, not Agnetha and Anni-Frid) wrote a lot of music for other artists, and their Polar Studio in Stockholm was widely used and praised by numerous artists over the world.

One Night In Bangkok was a superhit and came in as nr. 3 on the Billboard chart.

Trying to lecture a Swede about a Swedish band isn't a good idea. I get it, Johan.:D
One Night in Bangkok over weeks No.1 in the charts in Germany.

Michael B Tretow...

Perhaps the record label says it all...
Trash Records

Just kidding, but his own records was kind of odd I think.
Still a bit fun to play when it comes to the lyrics, as long as you can understand swedish.

Stravinsky Rite of Spring for piano on a BIS LP mastered at 45 rpm. Keep in mind Stravinsky was an unknown Russian composer who was thrust into the spotlight after the sensational success of The Firebird. Alas, the same didn’t happen with Rite of Spring. The musicians were booed and not allowed to complete the piece. A masterpiece of early 20th century music. Sounds amazing on the piano.

One of the most famous recordings in the RCA Living Stereo repertoire and a long-time favorite of Harry Pearson who put it on his Super Disc list. Found a nearly mint copy on a recent trip to SF. Astonishing dynamics for such an old recording. The music and performances are nonpareil. Fritz Reiner was a legend and Chicago Symphony pulls out all the stops for him. Produced by Richard Mohr and engineered by Lewis Layton.
