The film , I never saw... I know it was about a Cocaine dealer trying to quit and the songs make it quite plain that there is almost a worship of the pimp life underlining the movie plot ..but the music! The music.. great arrangements, sumptuous melodies, great singing ... Sound is just Ok nothing to write home about .. Who cares !? the music is more sophisticated that many seem to realize... I read in Wikipedia that it could well be the only soundtrack to outgross the movie and frankly .. Taking time to listen to it after so many years one can understand why...

Jill Scott is one of my favorite RnB artists... She does some hip hop once in a while but this is a real voice with mastery and a great understanding of the genre ... I will start with

Album: Beautifully Human

What can I say that hasn't been said about this masterpiece? Except that this version ( I think he first Stereo Recording of the piece) by Reiner is close to definitive IMHO. The recording is all the great things that have been said about the Living Stereo recordings.. Plus one can truly appreciate the greatness of Fritz Reiner on this .. I have a Karajan Version and it it doesn't carry the same weight, expressiveness. The recording from RCA is (of course?) superior to the Karajan Gold by Deutsche Gramophon and that could count for an audiophile but even in low fi the Reiner is more magnificent, more poignant, more enigmatic and more solemn .. I would even say more serious .. The hall ambiance is there.. The perspective is somewhat distant if one wants to nitpick but to me the right perspective one gets from the middle rows in a good concert hall.

I have been a big Trower fan since his Procol Harum days. Twice Removed from Yesterday is still my fav since that JiMI influence, just hinted at before, really started to show.

Big Robin Trower's fan here as well. ...Same with S.R.V. :b
...'Bridge of Sighs' from Robin, and 'Couldn't Stand the Weather' from S.R.V. (among others),
and like mentioned by Davey just above.

...And we already know that Ron is big on Blues. :b
