What turntables do you use? Pictures would be nice as well :-)

IMG_3447.jpegIMG_3448.jpegMy newest addition. Pre-Audio ASP-1501NG Special
Double granite slab sandwich base, linear tracking air bearing arm, magnetic bearing and dual DC motor drive. Platter is Vinyl with additional perimeter weights for higher inertia (about 6kg total platter weight).

Nice TT! The double granite slab sandwich base looks similar to the arrangement of the Rockport Sirius II. Is that blue damping layer Isodamp ? Thanks

Yeah, the whole thing weighs 55Kg. The layer in between the granite is acrylic with LEDs inside...you can change the color or just turn it off. I thought at first the color was kind of cheesy but now I kind of like the ambient light it produces because it is not too strong. Kind of like what Philips did with the ambilight on their panel TVs. It is totally dead to the knuckle rap and you can do it while a record plays and there is no thump through the cartridge. That is partly the mass and partly the magnetic levitation on the platter decoupling the platter from the base.

Thank you for the detailed description! I have been thinking of making a new (hopefully upgrade) plinth for my JC Verdier La Platine, and granite is one of the options. While many audiophiles think using granite as TT plinth is a bad idea, we have seen some highly regarded TTs doing just that recently, including the CSPort and Verdier’s own flagship the Magnum. And now after seeing your TT, I think I will give granite a try!

I can tell you that granite was used for a long time as a stable relatively isolated base in physics optics research until more advanced sandwich constructions became available (with honeycomb sandwich inbetween steel slabs.). So, while it might not be the ultimate in isolation it definitely is more so than wood or metal. I think in this case the sandwich with acrylic provides some additional damping.

New to the forum and my first post , it's been very useful to me during researching purchases etc.

I have been into music all my life and started the serious stuff around 25 years ago-went into digital for decades but last 4 years have went into vinyl.

I am now building don't laugh my final system and this turntable is now been with me for around a week currently running in the cartridge but before the Jubilee I had my Analog Relax EX-300 in it and despite more detail on the Jubilee MC I sort of preferred the EX-300 maybe it was just that instant impact and maybe the Jubilee MC needs more time-only around 10 hours on it but using their break in LP.

But yes sounds wonderful. And yes further isolation is planned , going initially with the Ikea bamboo block that the reviewer in Stereophile used when he raved about this turntable/cartridge combo.

Hi Ben, and welcome to the Forum. Don't think about final system! There is always something else to be learnt, investigated, tested, dithered about and finally bought - and then adjusted, tweaked, played with, got-the-best-out-of, etc. But don't forget to listen to the music - full side after full side. The thrill of vinyl is in its lack of certainty - play this LP and it sounds great, but another one sounds a bit disappointing. And why does vinyl sound better late in the evening?

Since you ask - I still have a Garrard 301/SME 3012 series 2 from 1963, currently with a Denon DL103 MC cartridge. But the main contender is a Linn LP12, bought 1988 and upgraded over time to currfnt top of range status including Bedrok plinth, Ekos SE arm and Ekstatik cartridge. Playing this lot through Boulder amps is Nirvana, and to me preferable to a Porsche on the drive.

But anyway - nice to meet you from a distance and enjoy your music!

Congratulations Ben on owning, IMHO, one of the prettiest turntables around. I’ll give a shoutout to IsoAcoustics footers under whatever platform you choose. I’ve had good experience with them under my two ‘tables.

This is my oldest components. The Brooks Berdan radical modified SME IV arm (1989), the VPI TNT VI (2006) but sitting on the Townshend Seismic Sink (2006). Without the Seismic SInk, I would have dumped the VPI which has terrible, non-isolation. The VPI 19-4 used for 78s now has a superior suspension (now modified in their latest turntable line but with the classic VPI 19 design overall).

Thanks Jeff,
In agreement I always think my new set up, (amp is just a few months old) sounds better about 60/90 mins, no reason I can think of....

The irony of this -I sold off two sets of Oreas because I had DOA different turntable which came with a granite plinth -will try the block first and take it from there..........

Nice. I am not familiar with the Kondo monikers but do I read this right that you run a Kondo SUT into an EAR Yoshino phono preamp? That’s essentially what I do but with an Allnic SUT. The MM input of the EAR combined with a SUT is (to me) a magical pairing.
Yes,
To ear 88pb.

I will upgrade to Kondo ge-2i when it's released.
