“High End” is a relative term and may mean different things to different people. But the appellation does carry with it connotations of above average. The Martin Logan Masterpiece Series is their high end, for example. The AudioQuest Mythical Creatures series is their high end. The ART series is Conrad Johnson’s high end. The Vivaldi series is the dCS high end. The Opus X is Fuente’s.
For a consumer, Paragon Sight and Sound might be considered a high end store compared to say the Magnolia section of Best Buy. But the Magnolia section would be considered the high end of Best Buy.
In my estimation what makes a speaker high end is its ability to grab your attention when music is playing and establish a reaction to the music that moves one emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, physically (goose bumps hair raising, etc.) and in any other of the myriad ways that music moves us. Depending on the listener the variety of "high end" speakers in existence is very wide and deep..
